Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

From me reading it's the girls the feather first.

You are definitely right. I was just looking through my chicken journal. I read that within the first few days I woke my husband after checking on the chicks. I told him there was one girl (I had read about feathering by then). We were making jokes about five peckers and one 'lucky little girl".

I have some educated guesses going about my chicks....but I wouldn't get rid of any at this point based on that. I am half tempted to though, there are so many! They fill their brooder with poop in a matter of hours.

I am going to put a few plastic eggs in the nest to see if I can get Penny to go broody. If she does..... BCM eggs for me!! Or maybe Welsummers.... Hmmmmm................. what do you guys think? I am looking for dark brown egg layers.

After I was out with the gun, I didn't see the huskies anymore.... So I did some target practice. This is only the second time I've ever really shot a gun.

The Black dane isn't too territorial, but Ratchet is extremely!!! Zauk follows suit after Ratchet takes off.... They ran across the road after them today.

nice shooting lindz! very impressive

such a gorgeous day, upper 30's, super sunny. 2 hours of free range this afternoon and it was great. although I thought I lost 2 of the Foster girls, then one turned up and 10 minutes later the other appeared out of nowhere... phew. the dog from across the street was barking like a crazed creature, the roosters kept calling alarms and the hens kept darting back inside or under cover of trees... but things settled down and they enjoyed splashing around in the mud. I got some good pics, but I got one great one... all the boys from "Group of Seven" together outdoors, natural setting, all of them are in focus and mostly visible - I can't tell you how rare that is... I can "force" them all into one pic if they are in their pen... unless it's really nice out, the D'Uccle boys don't come out... they're great at photobombing each other...

a stare down between RIR Rose and Blue Cochin Delilah... top of the order vs potential broody... over the #1 nest spot.

and Royce... looking downright awesome even if he wouldn't look up and stand proud...I noticed how sharp his spurs are today... I"m glad he's chill.

16 Eggs today
