Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I went out to check on Rumples just now and my dog, Cody, did something that he has never done before. He looked at the nest very intently and started to sniff it. Could be good or bad I think. Could he be hearing chicks pip or smelling rotting eggs?? I figure if the eggs were bad that Rump would toss them, but this is here first brood. I am hoping for the first. PIPS...

Cody sounds like he has the potential to be an Egg Sniffing dog. You could train him to detect bombs amongst the viable eggs and rent him out during hatching season. You'd make a small fortune and save many clutches from the dreaded exploding egg bomb.

You must be very proud of Rumples. Hope you get chicks soon!!!

Well.. I now know what Cody was sniffing in the nest. I am heartbroken. I had 7 eggs. There are now 5 eggs. As I cleaned out some poop from the nest, I found this... Warning.. it is a graphic picture!!

It looks like a fully developed chick, but some how the egg was crushed before it was ready. The dried yolk sac is attached. I could not find the other egg. I do have what I think is a pip.

As soon as Rumples returns to the nest, I am blocking to coop. I want her to be safe.. I am so sad.

Awww, sorry about your chick. On the bright side, that is a pip for sure!
Thanks Mortie.... my emotions made me feel like it was just a cracked egg. I closed off the coop and the others are free ranging. They will have to sleep in the dog crate tonight. By Monday I hope to move Rumples AND her chicks to the crate. Plus add a couple of Red Star chicks from Big R.
