Seriously that was quite a jump for the little one. Seeing as how the others showed no inkling of figuring the same thing out I removed the roost.

CLindz, that is such a great picture!

I had a great day, long long for work, but here is where I spent the second part of my day...

and I should have had 17 Eggs, but I knocked the basket over and broke 4, the girls snagged another 3... but then 3 more were laid by evening...

OMGoodness cheeka where were you that you got to see Highland cows? Those are the cows we are going to get but we're going to do the miniatures which only get around 36inches.

there are 2 gorgeous herds of shaggy Scottish Highland in Prattsville, NY, which is where I did the second route for Saturday, it's one town away from Gilboa, where I work regularly. I'm working there all day tomorrow. hopefully, I'll get lots of great scenery pics. there are a couple of herds of long horn varieties in Middleburgh, where I live. now that it's summer, they'll be in the lower fields, nearer to the road and I should be able to get some pics.

today was so great, except I had a flat on the garden tractor, but fixed it, so the grass was cut, a picnic was made and the flock ranged almost all day! I didn't give them breakfast, so it was really easy to lure them in with some feed when it was time to eat. it was really delicious and extremely filling. right after, I let the flock back out and we lolled around, fat as cats, watching them. perfect day. not for eggs... only 23 of those... but all in all... perfect.

and a lesson. never assume. this is Topaz. she's one of the Dec '12 chicks. been laying for a year... and I assumed she laid pink. I caught her egg today. Green! and she's molting. she molted early last year too. her juvenile molt looked just like what she's got going on now with her neck.

Nice gift!!!

And beautiful coop. How many birds are going in it? I wanted bigger too... But alas, my second is kinda small too. Oh well! If I get a third maybe.... Haha DH will kill me!!
This coop is for 8 girls. DH doesn't know it yet though. I am keeping all but the two roos. I might need an add on to this coop since hubby put the storage on the inside. That took up the spot I had planned for my crippled Rumples.

Now that I have most Mondays off, I am going to spend the day painting the new coop and giving Rumples some physical therapy. Smoke attacked Rump this morning, so I kicked Smoke and let her know that Rumples was off limits.
I am also making another batch of pepper jam. I think a little more kick this time.

Question... do roo chicks and female chicks do the sparring play fight with each other?? I am hoping not.

Whooo hooo Smhoekzema! Yay for the last big girl laying

Scrambles I wish I knew.... Never had a roo before. Tho I'm sure I have a few now with the batch I hatched.

Yes indeed, cockerels and pullets will spar with both opposite and like sex. Some breeds are a little feistier than others, so you'll see it more. My EEs and Ameraucanas were super sparrers.

You should keep Rumples in a separate area until she is back to normal, maybe keeping one or two of her chicks with her if they seem content. It is part of the Chicken Code to pick on the weak and wounded, so Smoke will likely keep attacking, and if you aren't there to defend her, Rumples will not fare well.

Mine sparred with each other.

I went out today to feed the ladies and I noticed my RSL is getting a bigger comb finally. All their combs have been itty bitty but hers is finally starting to come in and turn red instead of yellow. C'mon girls.
