Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Congratulations on your first egg! I did the same thing, ate the first egg within the first hr. I had never eaten a really fresh egg and couldn't wait to try it. And I wasn't disappointed.

Okay, I'm finally jumping in for the first time! Mortie - how old are your chickens?? I tried to go back and find out but too much to wade through. Your story was fun to follow, so happy for you to have your first egg!

I have 4 hens - all about 19 weeks old. I'm anxiously awaiting my first egg. One (a New Hampshire) has big comb/wattles, is squatting, and is nibbling on oyster shell. I know it could still be weeks, but it's fun to see others get eggs from chickens the same age as mine.

Welcome Valjean, I will wait with you, mine are 19 weeks too. But we are entering another stretch of 90 degree days, so probably not gonna happen here just yet.

Val- Welcome! What you want to do is go back to page 1 and read OK's waiting for eggs adventure. Waaaay more interesting than mine. My girls turned 19 weeks today and only my RSL is laying. My RIR (or NHR or PR or whatever they are) are still teasing me by looking the part but no eggs are forthcoming from them. My ameracaunas I don't expect eggs out of for another month. Lazy birds.

Ok, thanks! It's pretty hot here, but not as bad as it could be. I'm thinking I'll have 1 or 2 laying during the summer, the others by the fall - because of the heat and a couple of them still look immature. I have one of each: black australorp, feather-legged cuckoo marans, Easter Egger, and New Hampshire. I'll try to get pics posted tomorrow. I'm tired of all the poop sweeping, water swapping, and food-wasting - freeloaders, indeed. But they are entertaining so I put up with them.
