Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

WOW! 25 posts to catch up on this morning! I fell asleep in my chair about quarter to five last evening, woke up at 5... moved to the couch... woke up at 7, moved to bed... woke up at 6:30 this morning... 13.5 hours of sleep... guess I needed it...

We have lots of deer up here, but no monster bucks... not enough food, not enough cover and way too many hunters... where my BH lives... they have monster bucks... I love venison... but get a bit resentful of the length of the season. I'm a hunting widow. I won't see my BH til Christmas. haven't seen him but for 2 days since bow season opened in October. Gun season starts right before my birthday, I never see him on my b-day, or Thanksgiving unless I rush around after work and drive the 54 miles down his way and wait til dark has fully set it before he will come out of the woods. then he's tired. I'm not bothering this year. working double shift on my birthday (~200 mile day, not interested in driving another 104) and after the Express route on Thanksgiving... would be 54 miles to him, then another 45 miles to his sisters place, all to listen to screeching shrill obnoxious people hollering "Ma! sit down!....... and serving food that is full of gluten and I can't eat anything but salad. you'd think after 6 years... they'd be a little kinder. I've watched her dribble contaminated food over my food and say "whoops". the one time I did eat it anyway, I was covered in hives within hours and my hair fell out for weeks following, took a year for it to grow back. never again.

enough ranting... W4W ~ that is so amazing! she is quite the sneaky gal! lucky pups to have such a yummy addition to their meals...

OK ~ She who must not be named... or You Know Who... can safely be referred to as Ogrre. Her tracking abilities will not pick up on the twist.

wish I could just say "Alohomora" lock and unlock the coop. I left the apple coop open last night by mistake. can't believe my luck that I still have 10 perfect birds this morning. I was so out of it... it was sleeting first thing this morning, has turned to snow, but is supposed to go back to raining for the rest of the day... heavy day today, always tons of mail on a Tuesday after a Monday holiday... mail moves 365 days a year... so Monday always has double because of Sunday mail that doesn't go out... so today... I have triple or better... off to work, have a great morning everyone!

Now I am gonna hunt around for a mini cow, and convince DH that I must have one. Can't afford it, but ...

Ha! Any luck? The deer have moved out around here, as have the coyotes, which makes me think the mountain lion has taken up residence on the hill again. Hubby sees all kinds of deer standing in the road on the way to work. Still rutting.

Deer question: If a buck is a 4 pointer, does that mean he's got 4 total or 4 per side (8 total)? I've always been too embarrassed to ask those in the know.
4 total

Four pointer is two on each side for a total of four points. A eight pointer has four on each side. We trophy hunt till the end of the season trying to find the biggest bucks. They are so plentiful in fact over populated around here you can get a deer anytime you want if your not trophy hunting. The deer in the picture had three other deer with her but you can't see them in that picture. You can kill unlimited does in my area but only one buck.
not necessarily, My dad got a deer with 5 on one side and 3 on the other once. Or was it 5 on one side and 4 on the other? I can't remember.

Most of it has to do with how you prepare it. You don't cut steaks from a old buck and throw them on the grill and end up with T-Bone steak. Its not beef and you can't treat it like beef. Antler growth has a lot to do with genetics and food supply. If they don't get the right minerials in their diet their antler growth will be restricted. Also a deer has to reach maturity to grow nice antlers. Thats why they have "seasons". If you kill and eat your pullets before they mature they won't produce eggs either ACW. lol. Just having fun with you I know how it works in the mountains

Agreed. The best cut in this tenderloin, which is really a long muscle support in the spinal column, there is another smaller loin on the inside that often goes overlooked...it is lot of trouble/work to get for such a small piece(that, I seldon share) what makes it really tough is the larger cuts are really the cross sections of many groups of muscle, each surrounded by a layer of fibrous tissue, you can remove it all and wind up with q bobs. Or cook it longer...forever. running or wounding produces lactic acid buildup which really affects the quality of meat...it is why you are sore after a workout...you cannot fix this by cooking. Add to the fact that venison is very lean, the chef is really the star behind a great venison steak.

Animal--a buck can have odd numbers of points....that is why a trophy buck is hard to come across. We have a ten pointer running around, which I am pleased to say, I ruined three hunters from getting him. Boo!

Quote: Thats called a non typical deer. A typical deer has matching points and is scored by how well each side matches. A typical four pointer has two on each side and a eight point typical has four on each side. You are correct that would be considered a eight point (5 + 3) but not a typical 8 point buck

there was a break in the storm when I got home, so I let the gang out, Betty was left behind to finish laying her egg... couldn't see what else was in there cuz Ms Fluffy Butt takes up the whole double box all by herself... we spent a good hour outside before the clouds moved back in... Betty did get out for about 30 minutes... I watched her finish up, she rolled that perfect egg into the cluster that the others had laid before her, nice and tidy before she left.

6 eggs today... so I took OK's advice and whipped up a Pie for their return, maybe I'll get more than 2 tomorrow...

in 11.5 years, my finances will become available, the nest egg will crack open so to speak... then I will build the Cadillac of all Chicken Coops, I still won't heat it, but it will have a remote control for something!
