Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

"Should I buy eggs or wait it out?"

My four Easter Eggers are driving me CRAZY with waiting for some pretty eggs!

Eve, Olivia, Bonnie, and Tink are now 23 weeks old... I know that I need to give it another few weeks, at least. But the anticipation is driving me insane! Their faces started reddening a couple weeks ago. One of them, in particular, seemed to develop a deep red comb that tripled in size nearly overnight. This same hen has also started squatting, and all of them have randomly started displaying similar behavior (in brief flashes) over the past few days.

I made two wonderful nesting boxes for them, filled with fresh pine shavings and white dummy eggs. The girls ignored it, seemingly uninterested...

And then, finally... today... THERE WERE FEATHERS IN THE NESTING BOX!

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

I ran out of eggs yesterday and had to pick some up at the grocery store. As I unloaded the groceries, I could feel them peering into the kitchen at me (they like to peck at the glass door). I tried to give them the saddest look that I could muster.

How long must I wait for fresh eggs!?

Soon, Marie, soon. Of course with chickens that could mean tomorrow or next month.

Next week would be a good bet.

I tried to give them the saddest look that I could muster. This is far more effective while messily devouring KFC!

they are beauties! and the EE's are sometimes the most frustrating of all... the wait can be so long. they do look pretty close, i say within 3 weeks all 4 will be laying.

the feathers are their best attempt to fool you. they don't quite know what you're looking for, so they left you a sign that they are investigating!! can't wait to find out what colors you get!

those are some long wings... the eyeliner has me thinking cockerel, but I've been wrong before

thought I had a perfect day from the back pen, the number is right, but the colors are wrong. there is one extra cream colored bantam egg and no pointy green Merida egg. must've missed one yesterday...

Happy Easter!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while but it's only because I haven't had much to say! Cheeka your eggs are gorgeous. :love

I was wrong about peggy, the pink egg was Babs', who has continued to lay sporadically. But today I found Peggy's real first ever egg! It's so small!!! It won't even fit in the egg holder so I have repurposed my ceramic chicken to hold Peggy eggs.

Here are some pics of it compared to Zazzles' huge eggs :) :

I'm looking forward to cracking it open!

In other news, it has been quite miserable all week but today it was lovely weather, all of the hens were sunbathing and dust bathing. <3

Happy Holidays everyone; I hope you have a lovely long weekend whatever you are up to. :)

ETA Just weighed it, it weighs roughly 40g <3

I just made a shocking discovery! I think my chickens are paying for themselves! Now... I'm not so foolish as to think I have re-cooped (ha ha get it?) my initial investment, BUT I am making enough from the sell of eggs to keep them fed. That's a neat feeling! Happy Easter peeps!

I have a handful of EE's that lay the light cream eggs that look so pink when next to the blues and greens...

I had a perfect day today from the bantam crew, minus Cressa, because she's sitting. Thelma, the EE Cochin lays green! and whether it's Louise or Portia, I have a talc colored egg that is the whitest not white egg I have. I think I will spend some time tomorrow taking pics of eggs. do a virtual egg hunt for Mylee... see how long it takes to find the egg in the picture...

22 eggs today!!

I had as close to a perfect day as I can get. 6 eggs from 6 hens-a-laying. One had a bad molt and is not producing anything, so can't count her. The 3 new big girls living with the bantams also laid 3 for 3, and all topped off with a few Serama eggs! Pretty good haul!

Still too many broody bantams. Powerful hormones. Makes 'em a little crazy. I can empathize.
