The blue egg shell gene in chickens has been traced to a harmless retro virus that changed the white egg shell gene to blue in some South American chickens . This also made the gene dominant. This happened 200 to 500 years ago in South America.

Since the gene is expressed in chickens and is a recent change it would not have been selected for by predation. We are selecting for it because a lot of people like blue eggs. The Article makes sense for wild birds though.
