Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

BareNaked for the Holidays is one of our favorite albums. Gets lots of play in December (and January when the kids aren't quite ready to say goodbye to Christmas).

I've heard very good things about Campines. Pretty, good food conversion, good layers, and not evil like some chickens I know!

good morning! I did some late night reading about campines... considered to be a bit flighty, but otherwise, beautiful chickens... someday, I will have a white egg layer of some kind... on my way out the door to feed the gang and check for chicks and zip off to work... Chester is barking at ?????????? so I'm guessing he's doing his job. defending against all, visible and hidden...! I do love him... he pooped and pee'd first thing... we're fitting together like a custom glove

I have just plan o leg horns. So far not aggressive at all. In fact none are aggressive. They all act like dogs. Lol they like to be petted and talked to. I have RIR, BO, WLW, BR, jersey giant, frizzle bantams ameraucana and 11 Dominique month old chicks. 32 in all.
How do you like your Jersey Giants? I saw some enormous ones at a show and thought they would be great to have around. Heard their eggs are not as big as you'd expect. Are yours laying? Big eggs? My biggest egg comes from the, who else, Leghorn (with the New Hampshire a close second). Biscuit is very friendly to people and loves to sit on your lap. She is food obsessed to an extreme, though, and does stir the pot, so to speak. Chases after other hens and 4 of them are getting bald from her mounting them. Things would probably be different if I had a rooster. The other hens are all different dual purpose breeds and are all less intense than Biscuit. My BR, Spot, who shares the top of the pecking order, never chases anyone and only rarely pecks. She has an intimidating stare and a good fake out move that the others respond to quickly. Biscuit gives no warnings, and goes straight into attack mode with very little provocation. I've isolated her from the others a few times and they are all much calmer without her. Would have traded her for something else, but my little sweetie pie son loves her because she is so personable. He named her so I guess we have to keep her! Biscuit's on my knee with Spot below making sure she is not being naughty. ng C'mon mom, you know you looove me!
I have only 1giant and she should start laying any day now. She had a rough start. When she was a 2 week old chick the others pecked her behind so bad I had to bring her in till it healed. I hope it doesn't effect her ability to lay. It was bad

I have a chicken who is refusing to come out of the nest box....seriously...she is going to need to be put in isolation as there is only four girls in the townhouse and she can't be sitting in the only box. She also has been pulling her own feathers out. Anyways I guess this weekend we will be building something for her. I have got to get outside and work in the chicken yard. Puff is becoming my little house chicken that lives downstairs, I was cleaning up after her crate yesterday and it occurred to me that I should have switched her to layer feed now rather than the chick feed. I have a few cups left of chick feed and am trying to finish it off. It amazes me how little she really eats compared to my big girls.

:) Went to the Zoo, this guy was my favorite...he looked so thrilled

I was amazed at the birds in Lincoln Park Zoo, they nested right near the walkways. Happily flying over the people etc. It is such a nice zoo if anyone is ever in Chicago. Free too.

Sounds like you got a broody to me

11 Eggs for the day, traded 3 dozen for some help carrying out the yucky old dining room carpet. Before I got home to do that job... I had a call from a guy who I had left a note for, asking about meat scraps... he's a butcher... he had some good stuff for me, stop on by... so I picked up over 90 lbs of beef, pork and venison hearts, livers, scraps and bits like dark spots... 3 huge boxes, it was all frozen, and while it was a very pleasant day, breezy not humid... it had that blood odor. I made it to the WL Refuge as quickly as possible... they were stoked! they were in the process of unloading a box truck load of frozen rats ~ I offered to help, thankfully they insisted that they were all set...

but it's going to be great, Rudy the Butcher will save all the scraps and stuff that his customers don't want, and because I drive by both places on my way home from work everyday, I will deliver it to Wes the Wild Life Man... which is so convenient... saves everyone time and $$ on gas... I love going up there, it's a beautiful property and he has taken great pains to make it a safe place for these animals to recover. He has so many birds - even a seagull...! Many birds of prey... a couple of years ago he rescued a herd of Llama's from out west somewhere... they were all rated at 1's or 2's... the lowest one can get before dying... they made it...doing great. I'd like to talk to him about his Pea Fowl sometime... I'd love to have a pair myself.

Pooches are wonderful, will have to go out one more time before bed. Since it's just a trip to the yard, it should be fine, but Miss Ruby has regressed. She needs no lead. She is perfectly behaved while walking, doesn't wander (far), always comes when called... even in less rural settings. I've brought her "dress" (halter and leash) for travel and not used them often in years. but since yesterday afternoon, she refused to walk with Chester (I was happy to share my ear worm with everyone...

Chickity China is maybe a good nickname...) anyway, Ruby would do her business in the yard, then return to the front steps, refuse to take more than a few steps when called... downright stubborn! I've been very careful to not make her jealous... today, she looked so sour when I clipped Chester's leash, it dawned on me! I went and got her "dress", slipped it on and HIggitus Piggitus Figgitus Fum! Prestidigitorium! (no exaggeration!) she was happy as can be, trotting alongside as perfectly as ever! I do hope she gets over this though... Chester "Nose to the Ground" and determined is a pain when there is another line to tangle with.

I remember having to hold two leashes. DH's dog was an English Pointer. I also had a Pom-a-Poo puppy. Chopper (big dog) was never leash trained. I took care of that, but while working on it, she pulled DH over ice. His dog, his fault! She was already trained for me, but he never made her heel or stop pulling. Anyhoot, he never could handle two leashes. Even if the dogs were near each other (we each had a leash) he would let her get tangled with Harley. I had had experience with three dogs, so I was okay with it.
When I had my sister's dog, I was glad Sturgis didn't need a leash on walks. Oden was all over the place!
Okay, so 2 weeks ago, I tried to remove the 4 Leghorns from the grow out pen. It was dark, and I only knew 2 LH for sure. The other 2 didn't have the hugs floppy comb yet. So, I grabbed 2 white birds, and hoped they weren't the White Rocks. This morning I saw that there was a definite LH in the grow out pen. Unfortunately, the 2 in the layer pen that COULD be WR have the same sized comb as each other. I left the LH in there for now. Meanwhile .... I GOT A WHITE EGG!!!!!!!!!!! Not that I am excited or anything! I actually don't know whether to be happy or shocked. I keep looking at it, and wondering what it is! I am sure it is not white, I have not seen a white egg in .... Forever! As most of us have not. Now I want more white egg layers! Ha ha!
