Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Haha! The white egg is definitely a rare and exotic item!

RR, they must be getting close. Any signs at all? My girls got the red combs/wattles first, then a few started squatting around us, and some got very cranky. It was a couple of weeks later that they showed interest in the nest boxes and golf balls. About a week later, voila!, we got the first egg. Very eggsciting!

I remember having to hold two leashes. DH's dog was an English Pointer. I also had a Pom-a-Poo puppy. Chopper (big dog) was never leash trained. I took care of that, but while working on it, she pulled DH over ice. His dog, his fault! She was already trained for me, but he never made her heel or stop pulling. Anyhoot, he never could handle two leashes. Even if the dogs were near each other (we each had a leash) he would let her get tangled with Harley. I had had experience with three dogs, so I was okay with it.
When I had my sister's dog, I was glad Sturgis didn't need a leash on walks. Oden was all over the place!
Okay, so 2 weeks ago, I tried to remove the 4 Leghorns from the grow out pen. It was dark, and I only knew 2 LH for sure. The other 2 didn't have the hugs floppy comb yet. So, I grabbed 2 white birds, and hoped they weren't the White Rocks. This morning I saw that there was a definite LH in the grow out pen. Unfortunately, the 2 in the layer pen that COULD be WR have the same sized comb as each other. I left the LH in there for now. Meanwhile .... I GOT A WHITE EGG!!!!!!!!!!!  Not that I am excited or anything! I actually don't know whether to be happy or shocked. I keep looking at it, and wondering what it is! I am sure it is not white, I have not seen a white egg in .... Forever! As most of us have not. Now I want more white egg layers! Ha ha!

Got another white one today. Nor sure If it was the same hen or a different one. But just as eggciting.

RR... you have possibly 2 more weeks at the most, but you could find that first egg any minute now! they are at that perfect age to start... any squatting? ahh... I see W4W has the same advice...

mine did the squatting first, the redness came second, and a few were laying and still pink faced.

17 Eggs today, that's so close to perfect that I don't think I will get any more... the only ones to skip are Peach, of course... and both RIR's. Violet has given up her nest. 2nd day in a row that she's up and out with the gang. Rose is the one who thinks she's a rooster.

still no pips, and I've been trying to listen to hear peeping, but the older chicks are in there or around if they are outside... and I can hear them... and I can hear Chester at the window, high pitched whining... so both ears are being bombarded by too many other high pitched sounds. Peach got up and took a quick dust bath, so I sneaked in and tried to listen again, and also laid my palm over the eggs. they are silent as far as I can tell, but they are vibrating! I don't know if I'm picking up some energy from under the ground or if I am feeling it from the eggs... but I feel something.

SBMom, it's not unheard of for a pullet to wait as long as 10 months before laying... crazy long time to wait... Peach was 8 months old, yours is a late bloomer... she'll start, and remember, all these months that she has not been laying will be tacked on to the end of her laying life... she should continue laying a year after her hatchmates have stopped...

Aaarrgghhhh lol!!

I thought she had started laying, because she got super red wattles/comb, but never saw an egg in their nest. Figured since they were free ranging maybe she was hiding them. But they've been penned up a week, and no little white egg. I need her to lay because I need her to go broody. Lol
