Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

the mail was 2.5 hours late again, and really heavy volume. just tons of letters and parcels... no way for the other carrier whose route is larger than mine to finish on time, so I took about 30% of hers and still had to go do about 30% of the route that I was scheduled to work half of...I finished in the pitch dark, around 6, got home at 7 and didn't disturb the flock to check for eggs. I knew I would have a long day so I overfed them this morning...but I honestly didn't expect to have to work 3 routes and deal with the dome light on and off so I could read who's next and then be able to see to drive... I want to retire.

Thanks really glad Its over.
Ribeye is going to try living with my Does, Sophie and Sugar starting out this weekend.
I will do his CDT vaccs and a booster for the girls, deworm all 3 and then introduce.
If it goes well, he will have a draft free building until spring.
We are looking for another calf his age, pretty slim pickings right now.
The goats will be ok as companions until he gets to around 300lbs.
At that point he will become a pasture mate to Bocephus hopefully!
I won't dehorn Ribeye so he can protect himself against stray dogs etc..I may regret that

In 2 weeks we will castrate him tho, so he stays manageable.
We laid 2 pekin eggs today

Beautiful eggs, Lindz!

Cheeka, I don't envy you your job this time of year.  The dog wouldn't stop barking tonight and then I realized the mail truck was in the driveway.  Carrier needed a signature.  If you have to get out and wait for people to sign, that must add a ton of time.  Maybe you could get one of those lights you can wear strapped to your forehead.  My eyes are getting too old to see to read in the dark anymore.   I can remember my mom yelling at me when I read in dim light as a kid.  Turn on a light!  You're going to ruin your eyes!  Little did I know.

Oh yeah, only one egg today.  Got 4 yesterday, though, so not too bad.  :yiipchick
I got four today. Roger laid them all of course........:yiipchick

Quote: Thanks OK! I stay positive, I figure the bad stuff is just learning how to do it better next time.
Experience is always the best teacher.

Here are all my eggs from 11/22 until now.... 8 1/2 dozen. Plus I got 2 EE eggs today!!! So hopefully that means that someone besides Hershey (who has laid the entire time...) is finally settling in here, and coming out of a molt!

And here is the feeding frenzy yesterday morning!

Just a word of advice.... if you are going to leave horns, make sure that you NEVER EVER touch around his head. If you make sure not to "play" head butting then it makes it safer. Their natural instinct when something touches the top of the head they butt it, and with horns that can be DEADLY! My husband has raised cattle his entire life, and his family for several generations... I had never messed with cows, but had plenty of horse experience.... So of course when we got our first bottle babies, my first response was to rub their forheads.... Hubby fussed at me like crazy over that one! Not being cow-savy, I didn't know that I was basically training them from birth to become huge dangerous animals that were just trying to play but didn't realize that their 800+ pound body would squish me like a bug.

W4W, you aren't kidding about all the time it takes to get signatures, or even just sometimes getting to someones door to leave a parcel... finding a safe place that's out of the elements can take time, then time to jot a quick note, "parcel in BBQ" ~ or wherever I've hidden it...

just my nature to give it my best, no matter what the job. when I worked mgt, as the boss, I felt it was important to be able to do every job that was "under" me, to be better support to my staff. I wasn't above anything, I had my turn cleaning the bathroom too... so when my staff saw me doing things like cleaning the toilet, or changing light bulbs... (on a 16 foot ladder) or filling the stock because there was a lull... I often didn't have to remind them to do their job. they knew how to work as a team. even tho' USPS is unionized and is

so political, I can't let my fellows down. now, Ms So and So in my office is difficult, and I get annoyed with her, but today was serious. and the other route, the carrier is a great friend who wouldn't let me down if I needed help... so there ya go.

I forgot! Chester's new collar came the other day - his name tag came today! my card reader is still not working, but I'll switch to the laptop tomorrow if it's still on the fritz. his collar is great looking, and he loves it - I am not kidding! as soon as I took it out of the envelope, he slipped his head in. if I take it off, he slips his head back in. so it was not easy to get the name tag loop secured with his constant attempts to slip his head back through... should have named him Goofball. cuz he is

Aww too cute!
Quote: Exactly true, same goes for goats, sheep any horned animal. rub the necks, chest etc. Never the head, ever.
My crazy neighbor Jack wrestles his bull calves, never seen anything so stupid in my life.
all his sons do it too! then they all run and go flying over the fences to get away

I just know the day will come one of those guys won't make it to the fence

I will not go near any of his cows, let alone the bulls.

Good advice Jchny! I am getting goats and hopefully cattle. Thankfully with the amt of acreage I have I will have to do mini cows or a smaller breed like a Jersey. But irrelevant of size it's a good reminder.

Rodger-put on your big girl pants not panties and you'll stay much warmer! Maybe dad will bring you pie to keep warm.

So glad to help! We have a lot of the same goals! Jersey is supposed to be the most gentle, or brown swiss. Good luck!
