Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

it was so nice out today - mid 60's, dry, bit windy but the sun came out for a bit in the afternoon. I spent most of the day outside with the flock, giving free range in shifts. it was fun and I took lots of pictures. especially of the Cochins. only Zira doesn't look like she's ready to lay. Delilah looks a little further along Zelda looks really close and Josephine... I bet if I squeeze her, she'd drop one... then there's Esther. she's 5.5 months old. bantam Marans... her LF mates laid by this age. and the great unknown Sillie Soo... only 4.5 months old. runs with the biggest and baddest of them all. I'm 90% confident on pullet.
Beautiful birds. I need to send you some Roger Island Red eggs/egg when you get a broody. They are very rare.

Cheeka,
Beautiful pictures as usual! I am going to come hennap Peachy! and maybe Sillie Soo!

I think that maybe Bonnie has started laying... I have gotten 2 short fat cream colored eggs yesterday and today. Yesterday the one had blood on it? I though yesterday that it was a comet egg, but today I am not so sure.... I may go down early in the morning and play nest box spy! Clyde had a bloody head again... I may try to put him and Bonnie in the little coop so that they don't peck him before I get down there to let them out in the morning.

Rogue has gotten really protective over the flock... I am surprised, especially since a few months ago he was driving me crazy and not getting anywhere close to the flock! I picked up one of the girls today and when she squawked he came running, but stayed a respectable distance from me and just eyeballed me.
It has been a rainy and yucky day here.... Hubby and I put up a tarp for them to get under and they spent the day running from under the tarp to under the coop and back.... It was quite humorous to watch out the windows! Snickers was checking out the nest boxes in both the big coop and the little one... Maybe she is finally going to start laying again! I am averaging a dozen eggs every 2-3 days, but it will be nice when everyone gets into the swing of things!

I hope everyone is ready for Christmas! I have some cooking to do, and tomorrow is Hubby's birthday. Other than that I think we are ready around here!

50 pounds of scratch will produce one Roger Island Red Egg. They are a dying breed. I happen to be the only fool who can supply them. Thankfully they are not in demand and are frowned upon by the PIP program. Sex linked birds that probably are the most expensive chicken that you could ever consume. Don't expect eggs. Be prepared for the unthinkable, corruption, manipulation, harassment, craziness, screaming, .....ride of your chicken owning life. Who is ready for the challenge?

Somebody please come pick up my Delaware rooster. Heritage I am told. Have the PIP document. Nice looking bird. Free to a good home. Roger has promised to turn rooster serial killer if he does not go. HELP

Oh no!!!!  If Roger starts, she might not stop!  Less chickens = more scratch for her!   I couldn't afford any Roger-IR's!
They are special needs chickens. Expensive?.....how much hell raising can you stand ? When the scratch runs out you will be put to the test.

me! I'm fool enough to want a Roger Island Red! I'm seriously counting on Peach to want to brood again, although I have a really good chance of having several this year. and one of the Fosters brooded chicks last Spring and Summer as well. wish I could help you out with the Delaware, but if you can't find him a home, perhaps you ought to eat him?

all i have left to do for Christmas is actually for the flock. I want to make popcorn, raisin and cranberry garlands to string up. but I can't find my string! I'll stop at the store after work tomorrow.

LOL.... exactly why I can't afford them!
cheeka could handle a Roger Island Red bird. If she is willing I will send her eggs/a egg in the spring when she gets a broody. Need to get them started on the west coast. Are you game W4W. Misery loves company. How bout it FRIENDS ?

OK ...you got it. Will send Roger Island Red egg/ (EGGS in case of a miracle) when you are ready for the challenge. Guess we are waiting on a broody now. Are you excited? ....or just crazy like Rogers dad?. It will be fun. Waiting on W4W response. Need to dilute the gene pool on the west coast:lau
