W4W I remember having Dutch, Checkered Giants, and what is the white rabbit with the dark spot on their heads......California White? is that correct? And the solid white ones with pink eyes.....New Zealand? ... Lots of mixed breeds. That was a long time ago.

My parents had a litter box trained rabbit hopping around with the 2 big dogs 40 some years ago. My mother said she can't remember how it was litter trained. Are they like cats in that mom teaches the tiny bunnies? If someone says a rabbit is litter trained, can I just put down a litter box, put Dust Bunny in it (which is what I do for new cats/kittens) and all done? When do I have to cage the rabbit? People are offering the cage and water bottle with litter trained rabbits. I need to know!

Hey MC! Rabbits living in burrows tend to keep a latrine area so as not to spoil the entire warren, so most have a natural tendency to be tidy. We keep Chicory in a larger cage on the floor and when he chose his spot to pee, we put a smaller plastic tray on the spot and he went in the tray thereafter. When he is allowed to run around outside of his cage, he will always return to the tray to pee, but we occasionally find droppings around (not such a problem). Never have tried putting his tray in a different place outside the cage so don't know if he's trained to the litter tray or the spot in his cage.

You will have to cage the rabbit any time you cannot be watching it. They are chewers and can destroy furniture and wooden moldings, but the biggest reason is that they will chew any electrical cord within reach, and can be electrocuted.

Couple other pointers, unneutered males will be more likely to spray (scent marking) and are not as fastidious with the litter box. Chicory is an exception, as he has a near perfect record. Sherman was literally hit and miss with the litter box, and so not kept in the house.

In the litter tray we use a pelleted cat litter made of wheat grass and cover that with a light layer of Care Fresh (pulpy paper fiber). Totally safe, no odor, no tracking, and makes excellent compost. A lot of folks use a cat sized litter box with hay in it, but we want Chicory to eat his hay, not pea on it.

If you have more house bunny questions, let me know!

Pretty good for having twitchy-eye! The only thing I've come up with so far is SCRATCH: Support Chicken Reclamation And Takeover of Christmas Holidays

MC, I had a checkered giant years ago, a big doe, she was litter trained, and rarely had an oops. I only caged her at night, and if we left the house. We just used clay litter. Whats one more lil fuzzy running around? Go for it!

That bunny is sooo cute, I could just hug him and kiss him and sqeeeeze him and never let him go! BA ha. Had one bunny for 4h as a kid, we were supposed to grow him and eventually slaughter ......never did....I think he got to 14 lbs and lived out his life with the chickens in and around the coop, and my monserous turkey project that never saw the table either. Ever wonder why there are white rabbits hopping around out there......such is farm life, you can have all kinds of critters. Scratch is a good one, remember, the more common a name, the less likely it will be picked up by the auditors. It also allows them to waste time on goose chases. Orlof may be too easy...its already been established that Santa resides somewhere between Russia and Canada...not the north pole.....that was a goose chase we sent the auditors on...he doesn't like frozen tundra and really is more social than previously indicated., likes to have a garden, hang out at the feed store, visit the pub, stuff like that. Its been rumored he has a second home somewhere in Kentucky but that's never been verified, that trail went cold for the auditors, and cost them a huge amount to follow. Apparently a few lost their jobs over diverted funds and Santa upgraded his sleigh. Gotta love Christmas. Scratch y'all.

There are two places in my area, a farm and a campground, where they allow the domesticated bunny to just go wherever, and multiply. The ones at the campground will come up to you. The campground obviously has a "no pets" rule.

Aha, I think if that were a campground around here, those bunnies would be roasting on someones spit, no doubt. My bunny never really wandered far, too fat and lazy..i think semi domestic white rabbits wouldn't evade predators for very long, those instincts are just lacking. But no, I wouldn't advocate releasing domestic animals wily nily, look at the damage a cat can do......our farm was pretty much in the middle of other farms and fields, and a white rabbit would definetely be noticed hopping about..course 400 acres is alot to hop, I don't think he could get to the woods unseen.:)
