Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

DH thinks a portion of cake is about 1/8 of a 13X9" cake. It will take him a while to figure out that he can double this recipe. And that is assuming he ever makes it for himself. Removing cake from the freezer is doable for him. This is still a challenge.
Sadly, while my portions are smaller, I also have a problem with rationing cake.

Coop question. I finally had my new coop design figured out. Yesterday I got the brooder out of the garage, and it fell over. I told DH to leave it when I realized it would be easier to slide across the grass to where I wanted it. Then I started looking at it on its side. I think I might build a coop that is near the ground (I will put it on cinder blocks to keep the bottom dry), but I am curious about critters that can chew through the floor. Should I put hardware cloth on the floor under the bedding to prevent varmints in the coop? Or should I go back to the coop being 2 feet in the air? My other coop is on a cement slab, so I didn't have to worry. Now I am thinking about all the animals that might chew through the wall.

I am bringing the chickens inside!
One egg so far today. I am watching the other pullets hanging around the boxes. I can't believe I don't have more layers yet. Maybe today will be the day I get a third?

Good dogs! I just played it and my two dogs are snuggling on their bed snoring. Worthless!

Son's teacher did that mug cake trick in class for the kids. Mustacheio's piece got smashed in his backpack.

But now he can make it at home by himself.

MC, we have never had anything chew through the wood. Dig under- yes. Pull chicken through wire- yes. Get in through door that someone forgot to close- yes. Of course, we don't have beavers here.

If a rat chewed it's way in, it would probably go after feed and eggs, so I think chickens would be safe. You would notice any chewing and be able to fix it quick.

ha ha ha! my ex from before BH believed there were at most 4 pieces of pie, or cake, and if only 3 people were there to eat, then there were 3 pieces. or at least his piece equaled the portion he deemed correct... leftovers...? nope. my fav treat is buckwheat pancakes, often with blueberries or some such... and they freeze wonderfully. I always make a double batch of batter when I have a pancake breakfast. freeze the majority... so good.

the birds have been out for about 2 hours, and all of a sudden they hightailed it back to the enclosure - all of them... I was outside, I didn't spot whatever it was they saw or heard, there were crows flying around earlier, didn't see hawks... but I took advantage of their early self imposed curfew and shut the door behind them. it's cold out. I'm amazed that y'all are just getting your first frosts! ACW and I have already had snowstorms! how 'bout you OK? any snow yet?

I've gotten 4 eggs today, might get a 5th before dusk...

No snow yet but temps have been in the low 20's in the mornings here. Heavy frost every morning. Frozen water in the run every morning but the heater I made keeps the water in the coop just right. We will get snow as soon as the fronts meet up with the cold air. But no snow yet.
