Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

ACW, you lucky duck! wiggle your toes in the sand for all of us stuck in the snow... btw, I hate puddle jumpers, always worry that they won't wind the rubber band tight enough to get us there...

nice to hear about the great times everyone had at Christmas, and all the eggs, and perfect days, I got 4 today, 3 in the apple coop where Peach likes to lay, and one in the old spot. the heated waterer is jammin'! by the time I went to bed last night, there was 4 inches of snow, in the morning, there was a little more than a foot, got all plowed out and shoveled the rest of the way to the coops and dome door, everyone was still on the roosts, and happy to have an early breakfast. by the time I got home from work, I couldn't get in the driveway, we got another 6-8 inches during the day, and the big town plow dumped a good 5 feet at the end of the driveway. I was diligently working on moving it when the neighbors boy came over with his nice big 4 wheel drive truck and plow and not only plowed the driveway but most of side yard. now i have room for like 6 cars... very cool. and it made making pathways to the rest of the property really easy. I'll be making him a chili as thanks, 12 quarts is my norm, he loves it. after only having 3 inches all last year, he was dying to play in the snow...

P.S. it's still snowing.

Finally the truth is starting to come out. Roger and Rudolph didn't hit it off. In fact it got ugly. I'm hearing Roger suggested that she and Santa have venison for dinner.

In other news
Dodged the bulk of the snow storm here. Ground is slightly covered. More snow predicted for tomorrow night. 20's tonight. Nothing compared to cheeka

Glad everybody had a nice Christmas.

I got 9 eggs yesterday, which would finally have been my perfect day, except that a week ago Sunday, Poppy started laying!

Now I have to get 10 eggs in one day to obtain the elusive perfect day. Only one pullet left to start laying, the half sister to this one.

We had a nice Christmas. I will update later with pics of Roger's presents. Who knew she was so generous?!

Been raining buckets here and is very soggy, but we will have a few days of sun so things can dry out a bit. Hope you all in the east are not getting too buried in the snow. The thought of needing heated water dishes sends a chill down my wimpy spine. Brrrr....
Generous? Roger? I bet the gutters on your house are stopped up with scratch.

W4W congrats! She is a very pretty girl, bet you are proud of her too, for such a pretty egg.

Gave the girls some worms today. No interest. They take to new things fast. Maybe they will be gone tomorrow. I hope anyway. Seeing the worms laying there made me want to run screaming from the coop.
We have about a foot of snow. The dog says if the chickens don't want to use the run, he will. I stopped him once today. he is just so small that the covered run is the only place he doesn't get buried. Not sure why no one wants out. They seem to like a little snow, but large amounts scare them. We are getting 3-4 more inches Saturday, and the highs are in the 20's for the next 10 days. No melting here. My snow boots, and the snow blower are at the other house. Guess it made sense to DH to leave anything I need while he is gone over there.

I am hoping for clean roads on Tuesday. We biker type people enjoy riding in the new year. Some start the night before, and ride until past midnight. The ride we are going on is during the day.
lau.gif
If we can get the motorcycle through the snow on our road.
I was talking to DH on the phone, and I think I will wait another year before I get more chickens
hide.gif
. I have 15 girls. I should be getting about a dozen/day soon. That should take care of DH's family.

MC, I have great friends who ride every new year (it's also their anniversary), so cool, and this year will be no different, just a much shorter ride and bundled up in snowsuits. the trunk roads are all clear, the back roads are a mess, really sloppy, hopefully they'll have it cleaned up in a couple of days, more snow coming saturday, but probably only 4-6". it finally stopped snowing, total 20", it's technically 21 degrees, but the wind chill makes it feel like 5*. Poor Pug piddles as fast as she can, it's so cold...
it feels like it's about 40* inside the enclosure, quite comfortable comparatively.

Only got 4 today. I have high expectations for tomorrow!

As for Roger - Rudolph relations, I heard that Rudolph started it. He was jealous that Roger got to sit on Santa's lap for most of the trip, and she was in charge of making sure the gift sack was organized. (The reindeer aren't allowed near the presents because they eat the wrapping paper.) Rudolph was making derogatory comments about smelling something "foul" and hoping that the other reindeer didn't suddenly turn "chicken" going through the thunder clouds. Roger had no choice, she had to stand up for herself! Rudolph's lucky she didn't go all velociraptor on him!

And look here, proof that Roger made it to California.

She gave the cookbook to Mustacheio. See the gift tag? I don't think those little footprints look fakey or anything. Do you?

And I was surprised with this lovely little hen figurine. See the gift tag with Roger's name? That writing doesn't look familiar to me.

Thank you Roger!

Awww! Roger was soo sweet! That's just awesome stuff!

Merry Christmas to my favorite BYC'ers...sorry I am late! We have seven kids and have been running ragged for the past month.
Seven!!

Now I feel lame for ever getting overwhelmed with two. (But I am old!

Hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for a happy, healthy new year!

I also hope you get a little time to relax.

YAAAA. I got 8 eggs today. So in the last 3 day I got twenty.
wow, lots going on for everyone! Wonderful gifts, and lots of

snow. GOOOOOO Roger, don't give up, this is your first year! It will get better and Santa will understand you must have priority treatment at all times! Shoveled out the sidewalks and little spots. Cleared all the pens and houses. We got the high winds and about 8 inches. Chickens and guineas REFUSE to go outside. ducks and geese love it. Alpacas were rolling and jumping around like puppies
love.gif
.the pigs, very mixed opinions...My big pig Bacon was just squeally and munching snow, my lil Roxy wouldn't come out till the food arrived. Poor baby girl, she looked cold. Hubby got a 6 foot hay bale from our farmer friend, and i sent 1 1/2 dozen eggs with him, and promises of more. I stuffed gobs of hay in all the buildings and got Roxy all snuggled in warm. What a sweet man the farmer is, he needs a wife badly. She ran off on him, years ago and he never remarried, Just sad. He is "old folk" pleasant and would give you the shirt off his back. I promised him a batch of chili for tomorrow and beef stew for the weekend. I am gonna find him a lady yet
big_smile.png
hehehe!!!
Santa brought me a wire egg basket (yay!), heated dog bowl (chickens will get that) and warm snuggley slippers. Best present was a brand new laptop!!!!

(still no camera, but laptop nixes THAT!) My old one is 5 years old, the keyboard quit working and what a pain, ugh.

Sounds like Santa did right by you this year!

A new laptop sounds great. My son now has a new one that is lightyears better than my refurbed dinosaur. But then all I really do is a bit of emailing and BYC. Hope a camera is in your near future. There might be some really good end of the year deals. It would be nice to see pics of your menagerie. How are the chickies doing?
Their feathers must be coming in a bit by now and soon they will be escaping the brooder!

A couple of decades ago I had the pleasure of flying through a thunder snow storm with about 28 other people. From Pitts, PA to clarksburg WV. Lots of turbulance lightning and ice on the wings. No one spoke. Not at all. We just sat and rode it out...very scary. Now that was a puddle jumper flight I won't forget. Thank God for good pilots. We were real happy to land. But hey y'all, I'm down in Florida and the weather is .....perfect. reports are chickens fne, autos are working, wind/snow breaks are good. Glad everyone had a good Christmas..me too!
Ooooo, warm sand sounds lovely.
smiley-happy069.gif
What a great way to spend the winter. My hubby's sister and bro-in-law live in Arizona and have the opposite schedule. They take off in their motor home (more like a rolling palace) during the unbearably hot summers and tour the country, meeting up with friends along the way. Winters are mild and they stay home and spend the holidays with family. A good life! But not as good as it would be with chickens!

Cheeka, you win the brrrr cold award.

Good thing the weather agrees with you. How awesome (and convenient) to have a young man near looking for an excuse to use his snowplow! And he gets chili to boot! Sounds like your flock is all snug in their coop. Staying dry and out of the wind will keep them safe. How are the chicks? Starting to fly? My guys started "chicken bombing" each other at a few weeks old. One would jump/fly up really high and come crashing down on a random victim. Think of a kid cannonballing into a swimming pool! My two EEs started it and they were larger than all the others. It was excellent entertainment. CHICKEN BOMB!!!

Highs in the 20s for 10 days and no snow boots? You get the brrrr cold award too.
smiley-gen125.gif
Sounds a bit uncomfortable for riding. Do they made chains for motorcycle tires?
big_smile.png
15 chickens is a good amount, and remember, most hens really slow down after the second year or so, so if you wait to get more, your flock will be staggered and you'll always have some good layers. Hope you have a great new years ride!
