Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

That was the worst ten minutes of my life! Okay, not the worst, but bad.
The chicks needed water. I filled their water in the kitchen, and the thunder began to roll. I gave them their water, and realized I had to go potty AGAIN!! Stupid iced coffee! But I wanted to get the FF inside the big coop before it began to pour. So I dashed out, and grabbed the feed. I put it down, and realized they needed water too. Out to the hose I go! I grabbed the bucket from the hook, and knocked the dog off my leg (cold wet paws on my bare leg while I am doing the pee pee dance!)
I filled the bucket, and got half way to the coop when the bucket broke. I didn't get too wet (from the bucket anyway). So back to the hose with what was left of the bucket (it wasn't even a cheap one). I got some water In it, and headed back to the coop (OHHHHH I had to go potty!!) Then I had to convince Cadbury to get back in the coop so I could shut the door. She FINALLY went in, and I dashed for the house! My husband was in the bathroom! I opened the door, and pushed him out.
OHHHHHHHH!!!! I was so dizzy from relief!
So, good morning. How is everyone? I have my incubator, got an egg turner, and a digital thermometer and hydrometer. Now if I could just find the power strip...

MC, you are a trip!

One way or the other, seems like you were very close to getting wet!

interesting... split wing... Si only has one stray feather on one side. he's such a mellow bird, I still plan to breed him simply for the temperament. I won't become a show person anyway. I have my neighbors Guineas running around my yard, barking up a storm. they are such pretty birds. he's got lavenders and whites. amazes me that he just lets them out... I live almost half a mile down the road.

my worm farm is doing great, there are lots of black beetles tunneling around, I meant to mention that the other day... but now there are even more! very cool... there is also a stink bug and a few lady bugs in there... fine by me.

I think it's more important to breed for temperament. Split wing is supposedly a recessive genetic trait, so if he's only got it one one side, it may just be a stray feather that came in funny. I can't think of any problems it could cause other than decreasing flight ability/predator avoidance. Can't show an EE anyway, because unlike just about any other breed, off color Ameraucanas are not Ameraucana.

I like variety, so the EEs are great for that and so are the Seramas. They have huge color variations, well at least for now. The breeders are trying to standardize them. Guess I'm a fan of mutts!

Guest guineas are good. They eat ticks!!!

this is my wonky egg, there are wrinkles on the other side too... looks more like a potato, or a deflated balloon, than an egg, definitely a new layer, it's a medium egg. it does have a greenish tint in natural light.

Ms. White laid an egg! it's the smallest egg in the next series of pics... so from lower left, it's Ms. White, top left is Peach. top right is Blu's, lower right is Isis.

I used Mylee's Easter Egg shells...

the speckled egg is from another new layer!

saying "see you soon!" to Mylee at the airport. I braided her hair, and she was all dressed up in a new outfit from her Grammy...

Pre-Sunrise on the ride home

MC, I have had so many episodes of Pee Time at the Wrong Time... I'm surprised I haven't killed all the grass cuz I just pee in the yard!

I haven't eaten one single store bought egg since my gang started laying. and I have spring pullets, so they lay all winter their first year, no urging needed... have more spring pullets this year... I won't need to encourage laying til 2014, unless I get more babies... which I will try for, my own stock and I want those Heritage Barred Rocks! but, i don't think I would do much in the way to encourage laying... nature designed them to take a break...

Isn't it hard to eat store bought eggs after you've tasted your own though? Does anyone else sprinkle a little cayene pepper on the chickens food in winter in order to keep up the egg production?
I haven't had a store bought egg since last summer when mine started laying. The memory has faded. Maybe I'll go buy a some to compare. Do a blind taste test!

I have heard about the cayene flakes. Did you try it? Did it work? Also supposed to be healthful in other ways.
