Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

That silvery/taupe colored pullet with the black beard is a stand out beauty. They all look beautiful and healthy. Surprised the white one (forgot what you named her) didn't photobomb all your pics!

jchny, good luck on your BCMs. Have you been canndling? Can you see through the dark shells? Seems like those can be a little tough to hatch, and shipping never helps. Were they packed well? Ron (the heart and soul of the Ca - Northern thread, not to be confused with your friend Ron in Vallejo!

) did a little test with shipped hatching eggs- same incubator, same breed, same time in transit, but packaged quite differently. Those that were well cushioned and positioned large end up had a dramatically better hatch rate. Something like 7 of 10 as opposed to 2 of 10. The displaced air cells wreak embryonic havoc. Kind of sad that folks with amazingly beautiful birds can send the eggs to their doom with careless packing.

The coronation sussex were packed poorly. 1 out of 12 hatched, luckily its a pullet. This round, different person, were PERFECT in every way so I am hopeful! I do hear peeps coming out of 1!!!!! They were big end up, lots of shredded paper, and bubble wrapped with the ends open. plenty of padding. These are super dark, so i cant see a thing, even tried 2 candlers. Just going to leave them all in lock down and hope non go BOOM

I did do the float test and they were all ok. I am expecting it to go well, fingers crossed.

What a shame. Those are so pretty, but glad you got a pullet.

Yay for the Marans! That packaging is what everyone says is best- cushioned with shock absorbers and right end up. I would think you'd be able to smell any rotten ones by now. Here's hoping for a perfect hatch!

I'm cross-posting this from the Natural Chicken thread:

Georgia, my broody Cuckoo Marans:

I know I should totally leave her alone, and for the most part I do, but I had to get one photo of her all fluffed up.

I feel bad (here I am attributing human emotions to a chicken) because it's gotta be boring, sitting there with nothing to do. I told my husband I wanted to set up a chicken TV for her, 3 weeks is a lonnnnnng time. Maybe get her a chicken raising book to read or something ;)
There surely has got to be a book, "What to expect while your brooding?" "What to Expect when they are hatching".

I want to see one of my girls go broody...I plan to stick easter eggs under her with Peeps Marshmellows inside ....eventually if she cracks one open she will have an edible baby :) jk...although I would totally play that kind of trick on my one chicken Tommy, err Sophia.

My kids would love that trick!

We have an egg!!!! A very pretty lil blue egg!

Why do Blue Eggs make us smile so much? Everytime I see a blue egg I break out in this huge grin. I see a white egg in my coop and I dance (weird right? but the fact that tommy or mary decided to earn their keep makes me dance). P.S. I have only danced four times.

Today I think I scared the girls by mowing the lawn. They are so friggen cute running through the grass towards me and then I pulled out the big bad lawn mower. It was the first mowing of the season and they all hung out under the swing set watching...eventually it got boring and they decided to lay down and dust bathe there.

I got seven eggs today :)
