He has started getting the lacing on his chest in the last few days (he looks like he's wearing a spiffy vest...but he's shy/ornery and I barely got that pic of him today!) Also, he's been getting his golden mane-skinny feathers. Road Runner is gorgeous, too. He is colored like a SS, but with slate legs....so I am not sure what he is. I will see if I can get a better view of him.

I have 21 (9 SLW, 4 EE/Ameraucana, 3 NN, 1 BO, 1 SS, 1 white EE, 2 GLW (I think) ) pullets that are all the same age as Fran and RR. Getting hefty and fluffy...but very little red in their faces, and still as flighty as 13 year old girls. Told them it was time to get in gear. We have a big graduation coming up and expect 15 extra people to feed....We already go through about 4 doz eggs a week...can't wait to get away from store boughts!!!

OK, give Roger a high-five from me...her life is totally about to change, I think she has it in the bag!

ha, didn't even notice the spelling difference...! thanks Sally, in the 2 butts pic, left is def Morgana, right is Topaz, I think. could be Penny.

those 2 can be tough to tell apart without being right on top of them. no derby here, and no news on yet, so I don't even know who won!

I won't tell, also my EE are named Snap, Crackle, and Pop ...only because I can't tell them apart except crackle has a beard, I have to really be close and watching to tell them apart.

i have leg bands, and they are great for quick identification, just haven't put them on the Wee's yet... Blu lost hers, so did Betty... I really only need to put them on a couple of them... maybe tomorrow ~ I have the day off. I plan to maximize the enjoyment and relaxation, but if they are cooperative, i may give it a whirl.

Reina I know what you mean, I literally have one egg in the house right now. I've got a waiting list for eggs and My name is about to be added lol.

I just candled the remaining 12 eggs. A few air cells are too big(I think), but that should correct before hatch. The humidity is up, the egg turner is out. Now I wait.
I was able to see good veining in some EE eggs. I was lucky to see the air cell in the Marans. I vow to do better with the next batch. Better note taking, and I will candle more. Some candle too much. I don't think I candled enough!!

I can eat my eggs again. The Wazine is out of their system. Tossing a dozen or more eggs a day was painful. At least I was able to keep the Brat's Angel's eggs.
Dog sitting is getting old. I can't wait until Odin is gone. So much t do, and two dogs in the way is making it tough!!

Sick chicken help!!! This is my only layer. Amercauna, about 24-26 weeks old. Has been laying about 10 days. An egg every other day. Two days ago she was fine, yesterday seemed a little weak, but was moving around. This morning my husband went out and she is skin and bones, empty crop as well.

She is holding her head to the right, and is wanting to lay down and over on her right side. When laid on her left, she keeps her head chained to the right, and her right leg tucked under her.

We brought her inside. Syringe forced about 6-7ccs of water with electrolytes and probiotics. We use save-a-chick brand. After the water, she was more alert, and had a little more fight, but still very weak. Left food, layer crumbles, and a waterer, and have left her be for now.

Thoughts? Took these after giving her water. She's my favorite, and I really don't want to loose her.

Sorry about your chicken. Unfortunately chickens, like most birds, really mask their illnesses and injuries. It is part of life in the pecking order to not show weakness. What this means is that she has been unwell for some time, but was hiding it from you. (They don't become skin and bones over night.) The saddest part is that by the time we do notice, they can be pretty far gone and it is harder to treat them.

If she is having neurological symptoms, she could have Mareks, a very serious and widespread disease. At her age, the chances are good that she will survive if she gets help eating and drinking -which you've already started- until she recovers. If it is Mareks, it also means all your chickens are at risk, and as carriers can pass the disease on to other chickens. I don't know for sure, but think it would be a good idea to research it and see if the symptoms match.

I'll go back and read your other posts to see if anything else rings a bell.

That's called Wry Neck. Get to the drugstore ASAP and get some Pedolyte or however you spell it, Anyway baby vitamins WITHOUT IRON. Use an eyedropper and pick her up, open the mouth, put the eyedropper to the very back of her mouth then squeeze it in there. That way you'll avoid having her suck it down the windpipe. In chickens, the windpipe comes into the mouth at the "front" and the esophagus in the "rear" of the mouth.

Do this once or twice a day for a couple days. She should recover like magic if it's not too late. AND: The stuff you're already giving her is great too! But add those vitamins. Wry neck is caused by a lack of a certain vitamin and for some reason one will have it yet none of the others do.



It could be wry neck but she has a bit more going on it seems. The responder means PolyViSol (no iron!) for kids. I think people just give a drop or two each day. Probably won't hurt her no matter the problem. Keep feeding her. She needs energy.

Parasites/worms also makes me think possibility of affecting her this way. If she is bony and thin, its also a sign something is robbing nutrients from her, that's another reason its not noticeable until it takes its toll on their body, and nervous system.
