Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

OK, If Roger won't go crazy without her chick, let the other mama have Jr. Otherwise, Roger is doing what she is supposed to. Are you sure she isn't reprimanding the other chicks, and not being mean?
Sally, it does sound like a molt.

Thanks MC I just have yet to seen molt but the previous owner has seen molting with these girls and was unsure...okay so I had to jump on and show y'all what I just found in the coop. I think a turkey broke in and laid an egg...this thing is huge...funny part is it doesn't feel heavy ...weird right?

the egg that was the triple yolk wasn't very heavy either. but it did not have a terribly thick shell... that egg is huge! can't wait to hear what's inside....

OK, as far as the Rogers... Mama R is doing her job. and they can be very "mean" about it... they will work it out, but keep them separated while you can. Pebble is just now at what... 10 weeks? starting to stand up to the big girls. he pulled a feather out of Blossom today in the chest bump battle... he doesn't win all the time, but he's doing so well I'm considering moving him and Olive back in the dome before Peach's new chicks hatch. you can take the chick and give it to BO Broody, she'll likely take it on no problem, but Roger might lament the loss... and that would mean LOADS of trouble...

Sally, I'm with MC, sounds like molt... besides, major change can cause a change in laying, many newly placed older birds won't lay for a month or longer after a move.

Thanks cheeka, MC, and Sally. I won't do anything till the weekend. She has been a good mommy. Hate to take her chick away for all of the obvious reasons. Might try to make more room for her and the chick this weekend.(and get some more pictures) Two weeks Sunday

This is ALL your fault!! I wanted a broody, and now I have TWO! You and all your talk about Roger the BR and a BO going broody. I have no BO yet, so I have a BR and Golden Buff. Buffy (not really her name, but it works!) is in Baby's nest. Baby is the next box over now. I am guessing 10 eggs between them.
I am now starting to get worried about someone not sitting, but why do I care? It hurts to think that chicks will die, but if that did happen, I would deal with it. Have I mentioned that I have 37 chick/chickens, 26 eggs in the brooder (going to be a bad hatch due to shipping errors, but still...) and BO chicks on the way? I need to get rid of about 20 chick/chickens.

MC, as crazy as it sounds, I wish I was in your position! I need more birds! so many people are in line to take my hatches... I almost should get an incubator... i won't, but still... it's getting ridiculous! I am now actually concerned that folks will try to talk me into giving away my grown birds! it's funny... old BH was always trying to talk me into giving up some birds which I would never do... and my birds are nothing "special", except to me of course... and I guess to lots of folks around here too! Pebble has a home, he will go with the newest hatch due in about 5 days.

Cheeka I was debating hatching eggs but I am afraid I won't be able to rehome all the chicks, if I have that problem, want some? I could drive them up to you. Right now I'm itching for fertile eggs but that worry of having too many chicks is what stops me. I am picking up new babies at the fair this weekend rather than hatching them myself because of this.

Okay so here is the insides of monster egg...

Double yolk...it was kind of weird how airy light that egg felt. The outside was really thick and hard though...it looked like it had veins on the shell itself.

MC i hear ya, its not really been much more work, just more feed. If they didnt free range I couldn't afford it. Winter we will clear out all but the best roosters, put the rest in the freezer.
Cheeka, EE are super popular here. My Bunny is kicking out 100% fertile eggs, so I sell out of EE every week! Wish I had more adult girls. I am looking hard at getting some splash Amerucanas. Want a different color chicken, and I can do olive eggers too

Sally huge egg! I have yet to see one here but I am hatching most everything. What kind of babies are you getting?

The second girl got off her nest today. She was on the roost tonight. The BR did that at first, too. It was only one night off, and then she stayed put. So who knows?
I have 2 splash EE in with the BCM. That means their eggs were OE. None made it to hatch (one came close). Now I haven't gotten a single egg from them in 3 weeks. If it is a slow molt, I hope they hurry up!

They are healthy otherwise. In fact, the Marans lay daily! They are not supposed to!
I stupidly left extra eggs in the broody nest today. She is 4-5 days into this. That was really stupid!! Do I remove them tomorrow, and toss them, or let her keep them, and put them in the incubator when her other chicks are out?
I didn't read the whole thing. I should have before sending the letter. Apparently bird deliveries will also be cut back to April-October (I think that was the frame).
Dear Valued Murray McMurray Hatchery Customer,
It has come to our attention the Post Office is requesting a change to the shipment of poultry through the mail. The following link is a copy of the proposal in PDF form or You can read the proposal on-line at the Federal Register: https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2013/04/24/2013-09603/new-mailing-standards-for-live-animals-and-special-handling
They are asking that a Special Handle Fee be charged on every Live Animal Shipment. This proposal would increase the postage amount by $9.00 to $11.95 per box.
The proposal outlines the new fees to be charged but it does not include any new rules to insure us that service would also improve. Nor does it offer how additional funds would address their concerns about; Protection of Postal Service employees, mail and the environment, or animals against death.
Please read the proposed changes and send your comments to the US Post Office. We have included a link to a sample letter (in MS Word) for your use. (Sample Letter Link)
Make your voice heard, do it today. The comment period ends next week May 24. Thank you for your continued support.
Letters and e-mails must be submitted on or before May 24, 2013, by sending to the below address or Emailed to [email protected], with a subject line of "Live Animals".
