Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hmm. Found my SLW sitting on these two eggs today. Turned the girls out for some free range time. She was out, then went into the coop, was in there for quite some time. So I went to check on her. They are medium, more pullet size eggs. My RIR pullet eggs are darker than these. And I've been getting a lighter, large brown, kinda speckled egg, that I assume is from my RIR hen. Could these be SLW? Or did she steal my pullet eggs? One is slightly darker than the other.

I've been getting some advice to get some chicks to put under my skinny broody to try and get her over it. Considering it, but have the same problem, no good place to put them for the first few weeks.

Good luck with the broody. Do you mean the basement isn't an acceptable place for more chicks? Lol...no one told me.

yes, for sure, early comb development for the boys... it is pouring! a real torrent! I'm surprised I have a satellite signal actually... poor boys, getting drenched. I feel so bad. I'm still searching for corrugated roofing material. I drove to the city today to Home Depot, and they don't carry it anymore, nearest spot they knew of what another 20 miles away and I'm not sure where the store is once I get to the town... so I will try again tomorrow. W4W, I love buckeyes, can't wait to see some pictures! Ruby loves flowers, my last Pug before her, ate flowers. rip the heads right off while i would be picking them...she was too funny... but I had to block the toxic plants off... she ate a bunch of mushrooms once, glassy eyed and dopey for a weekend... of course the only vet available was the city emergency place, 55 miles away. she did all right, but scary time! Ruby helps herself to the raspberries... when I can't find her during the summer, she's usually in the raspberries...eating away! HOPE you get some rain soon!!!!! I know y'all need it badly!

I feel your pain with this rain. My backyard is mush....it's horrible to keep the girls locked up but with the wet weather no choice. They came out twice in the rain and like it but I hate seeing me getting wet. It's been chilly too.

really cute SBMom! probably EE's rather than true to breed, but they will lay colored eggs, or donate the gene... 2 have hatched for sure! the one from this morning is BR x EE, cream egg, and the newest to hatch is EE all the way, blue egg. still waiting for BSL x EE from a medium brown color speckled egg. gorgeous broody Mama second to hatch, tucked under her wing Mama's back is erupting! the first to hatch pops up ~ must be missing a party or something up topside! so sweet, with eyeliner and everything!

I got some advice from TJ, the chicken guy at the feed store today. He said if the hen is seriously broody, has been sitting on nothing for a coupe of weeks, than it usually works really well to sneak very young hatched chicks under her well after dark. Too soon and their hormone cycle might not allow the hen to accept them and become a good mommy. Next time your BO goes broody, you could give her some sexed Delaware pullets to raise. 3 days or younger is best. Since the timing won't work for me to have chicks right now, TJ suggested putting my skinny broody in a wire floored cage up off the ground for a few days. He said exposure to light (but not full sun) will help get her hormones back on laying track. This will be my plan for Sunday (in addition to assembling the mini-coop). Have to go to a funeral in the city tomorrow. One of hub's aunties passed, very unexpectedly, from a heart attack.

Most of the crew as they escaped the coop for the day...the one pullet on the far left is the one I mentioned before. Also, my oldest kiddo graduated from high school on Friday...soooo....gonna share a pic! my Mini and all her siblings.

New broody coop I am building. I will have the roof on tomorrow. I used the scrap metal from the roof to line the bottom to keep out predators. They will be living in the woods as you can tell from the pictures so extra care to keep out the bad guys.

I love the work in progress. Want to do mine? Welli have good news, my husband will be working on it this month YaY. We had a long weekend. Lily was christened on Sunday. Out of town guests including my in laws. I hosted an engagement party for my sister and her fiancé on Saturday. Today I got to catch up with the girls. Although all the company wanted to see the chicks and eat eggs ...it was amusing. Best of wishes to everyone. I hope you all had a lovely Memorial Day and for those of you who have served or have family in service to our country, THANK YOU.

Hahaha! Sally, you've got to stop giving your computer caffeine. Makes it jumpy!

The skinny broody is outside in a cage with a wire floor up off the ground. She does not seem happy, but we are closing in on 2 months of extreme broodiness and it can't be healthy for her, sooo we will try broody reeducation camp for a few days (roosting in coop at night) and see if she can shake the hormones. Feed store chicken guy said more sunlight will help readjust the hormones, so she is outside under the apple tree.

The service for Auntie Diana was amazing; she got quite a send off. It was a beautiful day in San Francisco and the place was packed with family and friends and flowers. The reverend was wonderful, both comforting and profound and did a nice job with the service in both English and Cantonese. Uncle David honored his wife of 53 years with a slow procession through Chinatown led by a marching band with at least 50 cars following. It was quite a feat for the dozen motorcycle escorts to herd us through the narrow streets of Chinatown and past Coit Tower (another SF landmark) near where Uncle and Auntie lived. Then on down the Embarcadero and past the Giants ballpark before heading south from the city to the cemetery for the internment and then off to a local restaurant for the inevitable piles of food.

You guys would have appreciated one dish in particular, a thin chicken which must have been braised, cut up on the plate including the head and feet. Everyone at our table was skeptical because it had yellow skin, no fat, and was a little chewy. I knew it was not just another Cornish cross, and hubs, who had been in China for work last year, explained that it was called a "mountain chicken." Guess they get more exercise running around at the higher elevations! Now I know what a home processed chicken would be like. Pretty good. Tasted like chicken!

Anyway, it was a good day. Lots of tears and hugs and stories. It was very nice to see Uncle David smiling after dinner. Earlier that day was the first time in 20 years I had seen him without a smile on his face. We will be seeing everyone again in early July, as this is a family reunion year. Oh boy, more food!

Maybe I will bring a huge plate of deviled eggs (in Roger's honor!!!).

Linda, it sounds like it was a wonderful life celebration, and a great way to say goodbye. I can totally envision the entourage winding it's way through Chinatown, and think that was a really special tribute. Now, as you know... I have "mountain chickens" but mine are so fat their crops swing and jiggle when they run around... forget flying for more than a few of them... they flap and all... but don't quite get any lift off. I should probably cut back on the goodies... but I like fat chickens...

so I'm guessing "mountain chicken" may be a breed of sorts... rather than chickens that live on top of a mountain.....................?.....................

13 eggs yesterday, and I sold 6.5 dozen, almost no stock in the fridge!

my friends, who gave the eggs for Peach to hatch had to dispatch their rooster yesterday. he attacked relentlessly so he met his demise by having his neck snapped. "Boss" as he was known... flogged me last summer, completely unprovoked. I mentioned that he may not be here for years to come and they kind of Poo-poohed me... they have little kids... can't be having a mean pet. anyway, it's quite perfect that they have some offspring, but if any turn out to be boys, and I would think at least 1 will be... he will be a rotten mean thing. I'm not sure when they will take the chicks. they want them soon, but I want Peach to have her time with them too... I'm not running a hatchery... and yeah, I know the chicks "belong" to them, but they Belong to Peach. Once they have been taken away or weaned... I will be putting Si with her. if she goes broody again, I will let her hatch her own chicks. I can imagine a growing flock, all looking to little Peach as Mama...

Hello, all!

I just got rid of my husband for the week. I went to the fridge to find that the 13 eggs that were ours to eat were still there, and he had gone to my mini fridge, and took my selling eggs!

IDK what made him do that. But, he was having a rough few days home.

I just hope no one wants to buy eggs for a few days.
I went to the coop last night to find another broody. Baby's chicks are due Tuesday. IDK how many will hatch from the incubator. I am not sure if I want another broody! Unless I wanted a layer pen, I don't need mixed chicks. Even if they are 75% or more likely to be EE.
I had the dog at the vet yesterday. I asked about Midnight. He said if her leg is broken, it is crooked. He was not happy with me. Turns out he was an aviary specialist for over 40 years. Then he confused me by saying she could be egg bound even after 3 weeks. He kept cutting me off. Annoying, but if I bring her to him, he will come to the car,and check her out for free. My qualm is that it is a broken leg, and I do not want him manipulating her leg to see. I was looking at her this morning, and it looks straight. It also looks to be healing judging by how she was attempting to use it. BTW, collecting eggs by flashlight when you have had too much to drink is an adventure. I kept yelling at myself trying to remember what an egg looked like!

I did an egg count, and I have 6/17. 2 are broody, 2 are jerks, 1 is hurt, and the rest are probably under the JG.
I have found yolk on eggs twice now in the last few days. I am leaning towards thin shells. I don't have oyster out right now, though I did give them a pile within the past week. Otherwise, they are on fermented Purina layer.
Anyone have experience with an egg eater only eating a few eggs?
I wasn't expecting the JG to keep sitting. There is nothing in the (plastic) box for bedding. It was that way for Baby. She stayed a night or two, then stopped. I put bedding in, and she stayed put. Well, I went in an hour ago, and with a flashlight in my mouth (which has been dropped in the coop before

) I tried to get her up so I could try to see the number of eggs, and put some bedding in. She isn't as light as a BR! I laughed, and tucked bedding around her. Let her fix it up if she wants!
More questions. I have 3 boxes, and 2 broody girls. The girls are laying wherever. So far nowhere I am not expecting. Baby is sectioned off now so I don't have to keep checking her for fresh eggs.
Yada yada. Should I add the covered cat litter box as a nest box, move the JG into the storage area with the litter box, or put the JG in with Midnight. Not like the JG and Midnight are strangers, though it has been 3 + weeks. I just figure Midnight should be healed in 3 weeks, and the JG will be too busy brooding for either girl to argue.
I don't think putting the JG in the broody room with Baby is a good idea. Or is it? Baby is due Tuesday. Will the JG and Baby be likely to be okay? Hmmmm.... That may be a good idea!
What do you guys think? JG in the litter box in the broody room with Baby?
