Hi all! I've been reading this thread for the past week or so, and it has been greatly entertaining! I've enjoyed it tremendously and learned a lot to boot. I have been dealing with a grumpy husband, teething toddler and a very colicky baby. I needed the laughs. I had a few thoughts.
1. I watch the Bigfoot shows too. I like to make fun of the people on them in spite of the fact that I have seen a Bigfoot, or at least something that I cannot explain any other way. Driving home with the boys the other day, I just caught something out of the corner of my eye that made me jump a bit. Large, gray, bulky, man-sized figure hulking through the brush at the side of the road on a narrow curve where folks never walk. What really caught my eye in that split second was the mane of shaggy hair cascading down its back that moved as it walked. Rear view mirror revealed that it wasn't a bigfoot (darn it anyway) but indeed a man with long gray hair wearing a gray jacket. I had to laugh, because in that short moment where the figure didn't register as a man, my mind instantly jumped to sasquatch mode. Sort of a visceral reaction. UWO (Unidentified Walking Object)?
2. Trying out the ff tonight for the first time. I am very nervous that I am going to go out to dead birds in the morning, for some reason. Let us know how it goes.
3. I am very close to Jc geographically. I was hoping to find a better place to buy geese next spring than Rural King, and it sounds like I may have found it. I would love to buy some from you when I am ready for more babies. She hasn't been on much lately. Must be super busy with her menagerie. That and hunting foxes.
4. Cheeka, I am so glad you didn't end up with old BH. He sounds like a real...well... BH
5. I have had possibly the best chicken math ever. I bought 10 light Brahmans and 10 SLW from Rural King the day before Easter. That day we swung by Orshelens and they had EE chicks. My husband made the wry comment that six more wouldn't make a difference, so in the brooding room they went. The EEs were pullets, the rest were straight run. I have ended up with two roos-a SLW and a Brahma. Haven't lost a bird yet. I think you will like the EEs! Got any pics to share? We love pictures!
5. My husband was not keen on this crazy chicken idea I had, but be has been the one naming them and getting attached. They have even tricked him into building them a fancy schmancy coop which is currently at a standstill due to farming and work. Wait until he tastes the first egg. Tasted a store-bought egg at a restaurant for the first time in about a year, and in the words of my 11 yr old, it was "terrible."
6. I was condsidering BRs. Now I am not.
What? Me? But I'll be your best friend! Bwaaaaaak bwaaak bwaaaaaaaak!
7. You all gave me the hatching bug. Thanks a lot. Innocent of the charges, but sure wish I could hatch some!
8. I have now planted extra pumpkins and watermelons solely to use as pies. The power of pie is one of the 7 wonders of the chicken world.
9. Our house/barn was previously outfitted for someone to grow large amounts of marijuana in. The insulated partitioned and secure grow rooms have been really handy for brooding chicks, which is one reason I can't wait to hatch some of my own next spring... Hmmm, tobacco is supposed to be toxic to chickens, but I wonder if .... Well, you know how they like green things.... and it would be nice if they would mellow out in the morning before they get let out.... and this is California. A veterinarian could probably give me a prescription to reduce stress for the girls... Hmmmm. Better just stick with legal pie.![]()
