Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

in Peach's experience, she continued to sit on the unhatched eggs for 2 more full days. before giving them up. she kept her hatched chick/s under her or very nearby. it only takes a couple of days for them to learn the most important calls, come and food.
(in her last round, she sat for 25 full days) so I think a four day difference might be a gamble, but you never know)

OK, you really are funny...! wish there was a feather seed that we could just spread all over their nekkidness... it is amazing how many months it can take to regrow feathers.

this was from last night, but they are in the same positions tonight... one of the d'Uccle's jumped down because the red light that shines when I focus... annoyed him. But all is well in Cockerel-Ville... which is wonderful! Very short free range time this afternoon, but round up was easy, the weather turned nasty quick... and we got rained on.

today was the worst Egg day in 10 months. 2 Eggs. not a typo either... 2. one blue, one cream. Oh well... I'm sleeping in tomorrow, the Slackers can wait for breakfast.

Yeah, I am having bad egg days too. Hope it picks up in a few months. I am still about a dozen per day shy of where I was the beginning of the summer.

Look what I found this morning!!!!!!!!









Guess we are on a countdown to see how long she will stay on the nest now! I have everyone locked out of the coop, so it is quiet and calm. I am hoping that if she is calm, that she will stay on the nest and hatch them all! The one egg that was Amelia's isn't due to hatch until NEXT week. I know that is probably not going to happen. But even with one hatchling, this broody session is a success!

CONGRATS LINDZ!!!! So cute! I am in lockdown and keeping my fingers crossed. I have the day off today and have a ton of chores to do and am praying the little guys start hatching today.

I am starting to think the second chick from the july hatch is a boy.

They hide from the big girls while they are out.

Lindz, Did you know wives used to place unhatched eggs in the oven when the broody was through? I assume it was eggs that were already due, but I am thinking out loud. You asked about using an incubator for the last eggs. I didn't catch if you actually have one. If not, my opinion is to use a heat lamp and a few sponges (for the humidity) to make your own little incubator.

Yes!! I think it is fairly easy to finish out an egg that is close to hatching. My mom hatched out some wild quail eggs under a light bulb. She kept them under a damp paper towel and would mist them with water and turn them a quarter turn several times a day. Can't remember how many days she had to do this, but 12 out of 14 hatched!

Check out this thread. On the first 5 pages there are a couple of pictures showing a quickie made up bator using glass pie pans and a light bulb. It worked to hatch out an egg from day 1.
