Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Welcome!!!

I set some blue (hopefully frizzled) EE eggs under a broody tonight!!! Woohoo!

Hello everyone. Coming to you from my new laptop, an anniversary (this weekend) present from my dad. It is very fast compared to the old deceased dinosaur, but has Windows 8 which is a bit Greek to me so far. Hopefully I can figure out how to get my pictures loaded soon so I can post some. Haven't been able to for quite a while.

Lindz, sounds like you had a case of chicken frenzy going on with those escape artists. Clarabelle is a good mama, defending her babies like that. The video was very cute. What was the treat? A special millet? They sure enjoyed it.

Sillie is awfully cute. Almost makes me want to get one...

Poor Hubby hit a deer yesterday morning on the way to work. Thankfully he wasn't hurt, but it messed the car up pretty badly, shattered windshield and all. The deer was running across lanes in heavy traffic and appeared out of nowhere from behind an oncoming SUV. He didn't even see it, so no time to react. He initially thought that a flying turkey had hit the windshield and couldn't believe that it had been a deer, poor critter. The insurance lady said she averages 4 claims per day from folks hitting deer.

Now, to help you understand just how much this thread has affected me, while driving to go pick my hubs up from work yesterday (because his car had to be towed), the only thing I could think about was finding the dead deer along the road so I could get it and have treats for the girls!

Road kill for the chickens! What's next?! (Un)fortunately, the deer was gone by the time I got there, so someone else must have happy chickens.

Happy Friday, everyone. Have a great weekend.
LOL so glad he is ok. I would have been thinking yummm smoked sausages

The mind of a chicken hoarder is always at work. You are either trying to figure out how to make room for more chickens or a less expensive way to feed the ones you have.

lots of reading this morning... Lynda, I'm really relieved to hear that hubby is uninjured! and you are too funny looking for roadkill...! around here, the deer that get hit, if they are found in a timely manner... are processed and given to families in need. unless the person who hit it takes it themselves before the authorities have a chance... this is a poor county, I believe it's the poorest in the state, although I could be wrong on that... lots of needy families anyway.

the seed that Clarabelle and the babies are devouring in the video is White Millet - I've yet to meet any fowl that can refuse it. it's what I use to lure my gang back to their respective pens. as soon as they see the container... they are following. try it. you won't be disappointed!

for the 2 lindz's... I was thinking about that... and that was why I called chickenlindz this:

2 routes today, it's going to be gorgeous out, I'm so tempted to let the big boys out, but I won't get home til maybe 4 or later... wish someone could be here to put them up...

WFW - Glad the only damage was to the car. Around here the deer are nuts and cause major problems. My hubby hit a buck and mounted the head. All his friends were jealous and asked what he hunted with... His response was an F250.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Feel free to call me

Lindz or just CL or something.

Want to say thank you for all these posts. I've learned so much (Cheeka I saw how you were using a dog crate for a brooder and thought that was a FABULOUS idea so I ordered one on Amazon last night.

Lindz - I can't remember do you have any BR? Maybe they just wanted to see you run around the coop like a chicken with it's "you know what" chopped off! Nice blog BTW!

I don't have any BR. My adolescent roo is an Australope, and is HUGE! He is only 15 weeks old and is already the biggest one in the flock. Even bigger than my full grown BLR Wyandotte hens. He also isn't going to be around for long. I am probably going to keep my adolescent cochin roo, and one of the black Copper maran chicks, which all turned out to be roos as well. Not sure about the 2 buff cochin roo chicks yet. I guess we will see what happens as they get older!

Thanks on the blog! I have to get some pictures today, so I can do a new post about my night and the new girls! LOL

Rogue,

Phoebe

I think we may be getting close to eggs from this girl! She is one of the 4 that doesn't have a name.... Suggestion.

Hershey and Carmello.... the new girls! Sorry they wouldn't hold still.H

Hershey and Carmello's tail.

The new girls! Left to right: Hershey, Carmello, Twix

One of the new girls laid this, this morning! It is a really pale green!

I'm glad someone got it who hopefully knew what to do with it. I would have had to go ask the neighbor across the street, a great guy, who is the only one around here I know that hunts. By the time I got there, the carcass would have been sitting for about 8 hours. Probably would have been ruined?

The really scary part was that hubs had given a coworker a ride that morning, along with her young daughter who attends school in that town. Luckily the airbags did not inflate and, even better, the little girl had been dropped off at school before the accident.

A belated Happy Birthday to you! It wasn't too bad, was it? Did you get a that new camera you were wanting?

The answer is YES.

That's a great idea. They do that in Alaska with the moose that get killed by cars. It is illegal for anyone else to take them, so families in need get the meat. And it's a LOT of meat!

Same day there was a fresh mushed possum on the road by our place, and a vulture was eying it from the edge of the road. I didn't want the vulture to get killed, so I went back and dragged the possum off to the side. It was big, too. Never occurred to me to give it to the chickens. You guys have got me focused on venison for the girls! Do chicken and venison taste good together?

Do they have a special season for F250 hunting? Saw in your New Member intro that you are in New Jersey. I lived in Neptune when I was little. Moved out here when I was 6. Still miss the sight and smell of the fall leaves and wild huckleberries and box turtles and warm ocean water and summer rain. Oh, and fireflies. Really miss the fireflies. Not so much the snow, though.

I was cruisin' home after work, when I thought I saw a bunch of bicycles coming... this was SO cool! I missed the whole parade, but that was fun to see the horses. they all turned right at the corner that's out of sight... so they didn't pass in front of me... I pulled down a side street just in case...

this is going to be my new cover photo on fb. Peachy's egg is all the way at the tip of the bottle, and my new layer gave me the nice large brown egg that's sitting sideways. I'm curious if i'ts a double yolk. it's only the 3rd egg and it's easily double the size of the first 2. I should take a picture of those 3 eggs together...
