Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

wow, I thought I counted four, and one checking them out.

this morning I went to bring the chickens water, and found two eggs in the top box (the one I can barely reach) one was still warm, she must have just left when I walked in. and another one when I brought back another filled water jug, a few more days and I may risk letting them out earlier again, so far my wanderers haven't started laying in the coop though. The eggs are increasing in size, some I thought must be double yolks actually only had one.

I got a funny egg this morning, the one that was laid between water jugs (I waited about an hour) she was getting ready to lay when I left, and i've found they don't like to lay when I'm in the coop, they will display all the behaviours, but refuse until I leave, when I come back an hour later, sure enough there is an egg right where they were when I left. Anyway, this one was smaller than even the smallest one from when they first started with a fair amount of wrinkling on one end. I ended up laying it accross the egg holder in the fridge, as it was long and skinny. I almost missed it, and would have if I hadn't known where to look.

That's great that they're laying in the boxes, and they do seem to prefer privacy when laying. Some new layers will produce the oddest eggs. Just takes time to get the plumbing in order. Mine are out every day and will go back to the coop to lay. Once one or two start, the rest tend to follow.

I found TWO tiny darker brown Eggs today! must be the Marans... I have gotten a couple of almost white eggs this week too, wondered if they could have been laid by the EE I thought was laying the brown. but they're not very small as I have come to expect for first eggs... not that they can't start off laying a larger egg... and I don't have anyone who lays this odd almost white color... assumed it missed the color coat... the girls who are providing the majority of my daily eggs are only 10 months old... which is still young in the laying realm... and many are still on the smallish side. I'll make up an egg basket for today's catch as soon as I go back out and get BR Betty's egg, she was sitting when I collected. the new eggs were found in the store bought coop nesting box, with 4 others, that little space looked so cute with 6 eggs... I found one more under Betty in the large nest, and Peachy laid.

so I have 8 so far, hoping for that 9th...

the Marans are 22 weeks old, I got them on June 1st, when they were 3 weeks old. it was the 3-pack, with Veronica, the white EE. (Peach had just hatched 3 chicks and my friend who I had Peach hatch them for just couldn't wait to take them away... and Mylee was coming the next day... I needed chicks, to calm Peach and to entertain the child) I did get other Marans after that, they are bantams, and are about 1 month older than Silkie Sue, got them the day she hatched because that was day 25 and I thought the eggs were all duds. little Tufty chick was one of those... but I still have one bantam pullet from that batch and 2 cockerels. Samson has been crowing for at least a week now, and his mate Gil (Gilgamesh) started making sounds yesterday.
