Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

is that a BR Frizzle????????? omg add diva to the already precocious BR personality... don't warn them, just encourage them to join BYC and this thread so we can follow her! she's really fabulous!

Yup :) She's already a diva. OMG. I pick her up and you'd think I was beating her. She screams like a banchie, all the while tucking her head and trying to get her chin scratched.

too funny, I'd love to have a frizzle BR...

I got lots done to winterize the flock this afternoon - handyman sure does work fast! I got the front of the dome covered, and he pulled the corrugated roof down to clean all the leaves and pine needles off, then we got those back up and put bracing pipes along the roof to contain sagging if not prevent it... and we got the enormous tarp up on the roof and down the back wall - that was a bear of a job, but it's so great! I still have to put clear plastic on the front wall, but it's not necessary yet, the weather is cold, but it's quite pleasant still... the boys are warm if I stick my hands in their feathers. I figure, I'm not overdressed and I'm quite happy to stay out for hours, they should be toasty, being so well feathered. Speaking of feathers, Rose (RIR) still had one small barely noticeable patch on her lower back that was bare - it has filled in completely with pins - I didn't see them there this morning, but the pins are already over a half inch long! Isis looks so beautiful, her tail is a wee bit short yet, but wow! so gorgeous ~ and she won't let me take her picture! she runs into the pines or into the coop... still waiting for Betty to pin out. she's gotten several new feathers but they are all patchy, when she's sitting to lay, her bare back is warm, so I haven't felt the need to strap her in an apron, but if she doesn't suddenly sprout soon, she'll need it...

5 Eggs today, and 2 dozen sold. I have 10 left, that's all I got for the whole week. 34 eggs from 22 known layers in 7 days. I envy your #'s lindz.

I never want to go through that stress again! Thankfully the guy who made the coop only lived 14 miles away. But we still had to stop 4 times to shift it. Even with straps it somehow kept shifting to one side. I was sure it was going to end up in a pile along the road!

And then came the joy of getting it off the trailer. The builder had a fork lift, my husband had wood, screws and a chain. He was able to get it off with only a slight nick.

The next week will see going over it with a fine tooth comb to make sure there are no holes anywhere. Hardware cloth was delivered yesterday! Gotta love amazon prime!

Pictures will come tomorrow! I've loved seeing all your set ups! It's given me some great ideas (my step up brooder is a dog cage after I saw you use one cheeka).

I only got 4 eggs today though.... 3 from the comets and an EE.... I think only one of the EE's is laying since we got them here! Hopefully they will get on the ball! I only have at the most 12 laying at the moment, but should have 17 by spring. I plan to hatch some in the spring and increase my numbers to about 25 hens (or 30) and maybe 2 roosters.

Me and my oldest daughter went up to my mom's to rake up and bag some leaves today. She had a blast jumping and playing in the pile of leaves and finding wooly worms! I think she ended up with 10 or 11! It was a really fun "big" girls afternoon, which we don't get many of....

She made me and her Granna play in the leaves too!

Wonderful Pictures lindz! what a fabulous day!
being autumn... and with dogs... you know the poops are out there, you just don't know where... so I rake the leaves from the front lawn into the ditch. the leaves from the back lawn are scarce, but pine needles are in abundance, and I use them in the coops and runs. I get leaves from the roadside... I take peoples bagged leaves, and I go to the dump and take them by the truckload!

Thanks! We bagged up 30 feed sacks full today, and there are probably that many more up there that we may go bag up tomorrow! And that is just my mom's yard. We can go into the edge of the woods if we wanted, or 1/8 mile down the road to my grandmas and get more too! Just not sure how many I will need for the winter.... I don't want to have to buy shavings if I can help it!

My goats LOVE the maple leaves. We have a lot of maple and cherry here.
I try to get them when they are just falling and bag them for the winter.

I love using leaves - I have 16 bags in the front of the house, lined up along the base of the foundation. the house is well built and well insulated, but it's almost 60 years old... it helps keep it warmer as it faces west and the winds come from the west and batter the front of the house. I go through at least that many more bags over the whole winter in the dome and broody pen. now I have the bachelor pens to fill and that is as big as both the dome and b.p.! I used to feel like a stinker, taking bagged leaves from the roadside after people did all that work (for me...) but I find that most people are more than happy to have me load them up!

I hit up all my friends too. I have to laugh, one of our neighbors is an older woman, very unpleasant.
I have offered her eggs, tried hard to be friendly, nope. Even took her a roasted chicken once.
So, went over and picked up the guys leaves next door to her. several bags and got a call on my cell so was there a few minutes.
She called the police and told them I was stealing the neighbors trash

The officer is a friend of ours.
He was laughing so hard when he came over he had me laughing too! I finally asked him why we are laughing?
He went on to tell me what it was. I opened the doors on the suburban. I thought he would faint!
I told him to BREEEATHE he was still laughing and turning red, tears even! Gees! So I grabbed a bag, told him come with me.
He has had my eggs, and knows I have livestock.
Went to the pigs, poured some in and they squealed, grunt grunted and munched.
Goats were excited and rolled on them too!
Got a second bag and on to the chicken coops. He was pretty amazed. He has never had livestock.
I said, now you see what helps those eggs and bacon taste so good!
I did tell Jim that I had permission to get the leaves. He gave me a big smile and told me not to worry about it.
He said he just HAD to share the laugh with me! He is such a kind soul, and I know they have to "show" they are doing their job.
