Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Boy have I been out of touch! Lots happening on this thread! Seems most of you are hunkering down for your long winter's nap! After a long and painfully hot and humid summer, this is the weather I moved to Florida for! Sorry to all you popsicles, if the recent weather is any indication of things to come, you are in for a long winter!

I culled (gave to my neighbor for his dinner), 4 boys that were tormenting the girls, last week and the noise level has decreased significantly! I still have 3 AM roos, and 2 Marans roos. I am growing them out to see who is the best with the ladies. I don't care about breed standards, I care about peace and harmony in the flock

That cut my flock down to 30! I will most likely cull 2 more when I decide who to keep. I have a great black AM (Johnny Cash) that is wonderful with the ladies. They squat for him and he never has to jerk them around by their head feathers! The rest of the juvies have a lot to learn. If they go after the ladies and the ladies squawk, Johnny rushes over to get the offending bird off them and chases them off. Quite comical to watch. He is the oldest of the group at 9 months old.

I am getting restless to start experimenting with hatching some of my own eggs I would love to cross the AM with the CL and see what I get, as well as making some olive eggers of my own, since mine lay pink eggs! I could hatch some of the NHR's, maybe they would lay green eggs! I hate to wait the 6-8 months for eggs though! I want them now! But the upside is, I know where they came from and how they were raised.

Finally I am starting to get some decent egg numbers! Maybe my girls didn't like the hot humid summer and they are enjoying the cooler temps! I got 11 eggs today! Prices are starting to go down from the $75 a piece they were when I first started getting eggs

Sully, did you see this? It was in the Random Pictures thread. For once California is included in the cold zone, so you're on your own down there. Well, except maybe for the mobs of Snowbirds!

Congrats on your increasing egg count. No eggs from anyone here yesterday. (Does that count as a goose egg?) Still waiting on today's count. The EE looks promising; she didn't even get off the nest for treats. And I have high hopes for the Seramas who have been singing the eggsong all morning. Maybe we'll get a few egglets.

Brrrr.... getting the kids ready for school and the temperature in the coop is 32°... outside is mid-20s. We have a possibility for teens over tell weekend.

We've had almost 2 weeks of below freezing overnight temps, which rarely happens here. I tried in vain to save my last summer squash, but alas, it has mostly melted with the cold. Still has some developing fruits too.

At least it warms up during the day. Still seriously hurting for rain.

The concerning thing about all this cold is that it's not even winter yet! Wonder what we're in for!

Wow w4w that's cold for you guys!

It didn't get above freezing today here. I have both wood stoves going.

Need it to warm up so the kids can go outside. They're getting too big for their brooder. I'll include a heat lamp and then try to wean them off! Oh the joys of raising winter babies! But I'm so glad I didn't wait til spring!!! These guys have brought me so much enjoyment already!

it was 16 degrees this morning up here, almost reached 24 by the high point, but the sun was shining, and the skies were blue... flurried a bit on and off... it was a nice day. but it was seriously cold in the afternoon so I didn't let the gang out - I couldn't fathom hanging out in the wind... it's supposed to be like this for the rest of the week with a nice big snowstorm for the weekend. I forgot to take egg basket pics before I lost daylight, so I had to use the flash. it washes out the blue and green and puts that bit of light on the brown. oh well, still really pretty. (if I do say so myself...

)

They are probably a little stressed from the move, and the eggs they have laid there so far were already in production...

Thats how the candy bar girls were when we first got them... they laid for about a week, then quit and then started molting... Well, everyone but Hershey, and she lays about 4 a week....

with all the changes they've undergone, I'm sure you are correct, they are used to free range, and I can't do that here without supervision. I'm surprised they didn't lose any to predators. besides, it's all snow outside, we got 2 inches last night and it is still here because it was cold all day. those Fosters better hang on to those feathers... I'm hoping (and it does appear) that the older girls have finished their molts. the younger girls may experience a bit of a juvenile molt, but it's wintery already. overnight temps in the single digits. just darned cold. it would not be fun to molt now.

Beautiful!!! I hope to have egg baskets like yours someday! (Sooner than later I hope lol)
