Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hi guys, trying hard to keep up, its been hard to lately.
Dads ok but still not himself. We see the Dr the 24th for updates on all the tests run.
My oldest aunt has been sent home for hospice, Dads sister.
She had the same surgery 6 years ago and has refused to do it again.
Its not going to be a festive Christmas here am afraid, fortunately there's no small children in the family.
I am so thankful to have my awesome DH, and very best friend anyone could ask for. I consider him my Christmas gift every year.
Miserable cold, it is calling for a warm up later this week!
Worked on fresh bedding in all the coops, doing the runs tomorrow.Really need more tarps, may go to harbor freight this week.

We might have a bit of an odd Christmas too... My grandfather (96) has had 3 heart attacks since April. Finally decided he would get a cath. Thinking that alone would kill him at 96 we kinda prepared for the worse. Thankfully and amazingly he came thru just fine including a stent. Instead of going to rehab tho he went to my parents house to recover. He won't be strong enough to come to the family Christmas party so my step father will probably stay home with him too. It'll be weird but not sad because we know he is doing well!!!

On another note... The babies are roosting! It's so cute! I have a pic but for some reason it don't let me post!!!

On a 3rd note I'm convinced Phyllis is really Phil and one of the marans might also be a boy (huge compared to the other). I don't want to post pics because I don't really want my suspicions confirmed. Tho if I get a good pic I will!!!

Ok I have decided that we need to get a gun that I can shoot. Hubby's 12 ga. isn't going to work for me and the neighbors won't keep their dogs home. I am pretty sure that they killed the other neighbor's last hen yesterday.
I had an appointment yesterday evening and didn't get home until after dark. Went down to lock up the coop and was missing a chicken. Clyde wasn't in the coop. Locked up and started looking for him. He was rooster beside th he small coop. I grabbed him and you would have thought I was killing him. He proceeded to try and grab my hand and I lost my grip as he was flapping around. Then he proceeds to run around in the dark running into things and not going into the coop even though I had the flashlight on the door. Finally after a few minutes I was able to grab him again securely and put him in the coop. He was the only one who could not figure out how to get back in the run after flying out I guess.....

dang lindz, that stinks about the neighbors... I feel for the neighbor who lost their last hen. and your poor silly boy... he was probably pretty sound asleep when you first grabbed him. imagine his surprise and fear! glad he let you catch him finally.

I heard from the lady of the Fosters last night. she's back in NY, but down in the city, staying with her sister for a few days because she has been sick with the flu. she'll be back up here on Thursday. all she said was her ex hasn't found a place yet, he's been staying with friends and would probably need me to care for them through the first week or so of January. she'll bring up the rest of the feed and treats that are at her place - no sense in keeping it there to attract rodents. it's fine with me. it's not like it takes me that much longer to care for an extra pen of chickens...

I'm so tired. work is draining me of every last vestige of energy. the mail is chronically late and terrifically heavy, which has made it impossible to Ms So and So to ever get her route done on her own. yesterday, I actually made it home by 4, and was able to give corn and check water. amazingly, the water in the dome was totally thawed, and there was only a very thin crust on the back pens. I found a total of 5 eggs yesterday, 3 had to be from Monday, and 1 had frozen and cracked, those I found yesterday morning. I set the cracked egg aside to thaw, gave it to the dogs when I got back home... and found the last 2 in the afternoon, cold... but intact.

I have to empty my truck this morning, and I just can't get my butt up and moving. there are 2 huge bales of straw, courtesy of the guy who took Pebble, and I stopped on my way home and picked up 100 lbs of feed, 100 lbs of corn and 50 lbs of millet. all I really need this morning is 1 bag of feed.

Well, this morning we had a bloody head! Clyde came out this morning with his comb bleeding and his whole head bloody. Not sure what went on before I got down there, but Rogue has been after him all day! I guess he is tired of Clyde trying to get his girls all the time, and making them scream! I tried to catch him today so I could put some Nustock on it, but after the little escapade last night, he wanted no part of me! LOL.... oh well, hopefully it will be ok. I guess I will go down early in the morning instead of waiting to let them out like I normally do.... UGH. I normally lay back down for a little while after getting the big kids on the bus, before the little kids get up. The good thing about tomorrow morning though is that my mom is getting us a load of gravel for Christmas to finally extend the driveway all the way to the house since we hadn't gotten it done since we moved in this past Feb. I have to stay up in the morning anyway to meet the guy that is bringing the gravel.... so I have other reasons for being up and out in the cold in the morning...

I've been getting 4-6 eggs every day for the last little bit. I can't wait until I have another broody so I can have some more chicks running around here! It may be awhile, unless Clarabelle's chicks decide to go broody very early! They should start laying around Feb/March so they could possibly go broody sometime next year!

I think Marans tend to go broody fairly often too? If I do end up having a broody next year, I think I have someone lined up to get some more BCM eggs, and some LF cochin eggs! I may also throw a couple of the EE eggs under there too!

Great news on the gravel, little stuff like that always makes a big difference.
My 2 BCM girls haven't started yet either. I need to see when they hatched and count!
I need to look for a roo, neither one I had was the color I wanted, so I gave them away.
My one hen has beautiful copper in her neck, so I will go through that breeder for more.
The 2nd hen I suspect is a birchen, but so sweet, I kept her.

Wow you need a break. When do you get some vacation time?
Oh, the fella I sent the FB page to you is a great guy! I have several of his birds.
He is one of the 3 of us that manage the Indiana thread.
If anyone else is on facebook, he has some beautiful birds!

He is also a member of BYC of course

Maybe self preservation is probably why Clyde flew the coop and wouldn't go back in last night. Rogue must really be after him.
Rogue would probably be happy to take care of those 2 stupid dogs too, if he was a bit bigger.

Already planning spring hatching!

The planning and dreaming is as much fun as the real thing.

Our carrier drove up the driveway today with a package that wouldn't fit in the mailbox. I walked out to the truck to get it, and she seemed pretty beat. You're going to wear yourself thin picking up the slack of the Inept One. Hope the folks on your route appreciate all you do. Take care.

I have 2 serama hens, am amazed how tiny the eggs are. Same size as the quail! None have been fertile yet.
The 2 pullets Victoria and Kate have become quite chatty and very friendly ladies.
Harry the roo is a doll too, have realized he is also a serama.. My OEGB red pyle hen, Diana and GL sebright hen Fergie squat for him in a flash!
Kate and Victoria run from him unless food is involved. He can't seem to catch the serama girls or even interest them.
I have a few hatched from Fergie and Diana. Sebright and OEGB sure lay a nice sized medium egg,
I am really looking towards bantams for my egg flock.
