Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hey Roger, if we leave this one out in the rain, do you suppose she'd rust? I better eat her so that doesn't happen.

Quote: Hehe, Roger, I really considered it! I will be watching the actions of the little boys tomorrow.
If it is one of the little roosters, he is toast! I suspect her own brother. He is showing signs of being an aggressive roo already.

Olive had the top of her head ripped open, it was so nasty... but Blue Kote was all I used, it has taken 8 months for the feathers to regrow, the skin healed within a few weeks... I love the tiny little feather up front that is sticking up... she had such a beautiful crest... just last week she still had a quarter (25 cent piece) sized pink bald spot on her head. it's entirely filled in with tiny feathers...

Opal has finished molting, and is more lovely than before, I named her Opal because she always looks like a different color... she is silvery blue, but you can see that she reflects the pink bucket just standing next to it...
I would post a pic, but its horrendous. Upset me a lot! And the worst of it is, she came running as she always does, and up on my shoulder.
I reached up, and held her in my arms... and saw her, talk about a gasp! I immediately ran all the way to the house with her!
She is a very sweet little thing.and I just cannot figure this out. If there was a way in, I would immediately think predator, its that bad.
She stays in the grow out coop. Its sealed up solid. We put vents at the top of the peaks. All 1/4" hardware cloth covered.
There are 2 windows, also securely clad in hardware cloth. And they are locked up right now anyway. There is no outside entry except the man door.

Opal is just gorgeous!! I am really partial to blues and lavenders

Awesome!
seriously, Blue Kote is the bomb. I used it on Peach when she got that horrible gash on her side, and for all the scrapes and boo-boo's caused by the randy roosters before they were separated. but the clincher for me was Olive's head. that made Peach's super nasty injury look like a paper cut. it was all I used. (besides cleaning it with warm water and a soft cloth) even if her feathers didn't come back, the skin was healed and healthy quickly. if you have it in stock, use it. if you don't, use the stuff you have until you can dash out and get some.

I did use it, I had 2 bottles after getting the turkeys.. Seen some wicked injuries between the young toms.
BBW are some aggressive turkeys! She did not even flinch. She is sleeping on my lap right now.
I can tell she is in pain, every so often she opens her beak a tiny bit and does a baby peep.
I keep it in my first aid kit, I even have sterile sutures in there now.
With bigger livestock, I know there can be bigger wounds.
Learned a long time ago, keep it on hand and you may never need it.

Guys, need advice. I have a turken/Naked Neck pullet. She is in my grow out coop with other birds her same age.
They are all about 3 months old.
Today when I went out to change waterers, she has a wound, large one, on her neck.
The skin has been torn off a large area of the back of her neck, like a bad mating wound!
I am stumped, none of the boys are old enough, and she isn't a low pecking order girl either!
Right now, just want to cover the wound. Would blukote or iodine spray be a better choice?
I have brought her in so she can heal without further attacks or injury.
Wonder if she could have got caught in or on something and in her struggle to free herself did the damage herself? Nail or screw sticking out? Piece of wire or hardware cloth? If your setup is that tight I doubt it was a predator. And with no one else missing or hurt it kinda rules out predator. Boys not yet old enough sorta rules that out. They stick their head in everything. I remember the first night I brought Roger home it was dark and I put the Roger and the other three in the coop in the dark. I went back a few minutes later to see how they settled down and Roger was standing in the corner of the coop with her head stuck between a cedar post and a piece of plywood. It kinda formed a "V" and she could not figure out that she needed to raise her head up before backing out. I guess she thought there was something in there to eat. I had to correct that problem area so nobody else got caught in there. However Roger continued to be a problem area and it was on from there.

Janet, sorry to hear about your little NN. Haven't had to use it yet, but Blue Kote is supposed to be great stuff, and has the added benefit of disguising the healing red spots so there is less risk of the others picking. It's amazing what a chicken can recover from, and your girl will be fine with all the TLC she's getting. Maybe the sigh you heard while she was on your lap was not from pain, but utter blissful contentment. You may have a new house pet here!

Beautiful pics and chickens Cheeka! And Happy 3000! So glad your mom and dad are recovering. That must have been a worry! Last night my hubs left on the midnight flight to China. Only 10 days this time, so not so bad, but we will miss his birthday.

Lots of bad flu in Hong Kong (including avian flu) so he has strict instructions not to breathe anyone's air!

We are having unseasonably warm, dry weather this early winter. Still waiting for rain. Few days ago, we drove out to Bodega Bay on the coast. Got there at the low point of a King Tide and the shallow part of the bay was practically empty of water. Wish I had had my clamming gear. If I hadn't heard about the king tide on the news, we would have suspected a tsunami as the cause for the water rushing out to sea, and headed for the hills!

Getting a few eggs every day. None of the Serama show any signs of going broody. Guess it will take me buying an incubator for that to happen.

Hope your little one is feeling better!
You know, the amount of Trouble is directly proportional to the Cuteness Quotient. Based on this pic, and the very short good-puppy honeymoon, Ratchet is going to be a handful. He'll be worth it though! (Your daughter's Cuteness Quotient only adds to the problem.

UGh..... on top of everything else I think we have mites or lice (not sure which)! Snickers had a dirty bottom this morning which is unusual, so I picked her up to check her vent. Sure enough there were little creepy crawlies there and white eggs on her feathers! UGH!!!!

I am trying to do things more naturally without using a bunch of chemicals. I have so much to do right now that I really didn't need to add treating the chickens for anything to it! Oh well... joys of having them I guess! I picked up a few more of them and didn't see any on them, but I will be doing a more detailed inspection tonight when they are on the roost. I am going to be burning some wood today so I can dust them all really good in the ash tomorrow while hubby is home to help with the kids ect.
Did the ash dust work? They make a natural citrus based liquid spray for birds and coop that might help. Our Serama rooster had mites for a long time. I tried all sorts of things to control them, including poultry dust and the citrus spray. Nothing worked for me, and I was worried about overdosing such a small bird. Lady at a Serama show told me to try Frontline Plus flea treatment for cats. One drop on the bare skin around his vent and the mites were gone completely and haven't been back. I treated the pullet as well, to be sure to kill them all. This is totally off label, of course, and I don't know about egg withdrawl. Certainly wouldn't eat a treated chicken. In cats, this stuff will stay in their system for a few weeks. Just something to thing about if other means don't work. Ivermectin is also supposed to be good against mites.

George is running in circles around the incubator, playing football. I want another sibling to hatch for her. I may be hearing faint peeps from another internal pip. Or, I may be imagining it. C'mon chickies!
Congratulations! and a few questions.
How is George doing? Did she get a brooder-mate yet? Is this a Brinsea? Do you recommend it? Thinking about this for hatching Seramas. 12 at a time for quail sized eggs.

Happy New Year Everybody

.Who is ready to go out with me for a few drinks. I'm driving

A belated Happy New Year to all! Hope everyone in the path of the cold weather is keeping warm and staying safe. Roger has obviously solved the problem of winter travel. Can't you just picture her smugly rolling past all the cars stuck in traffic on the snowy highways? You go Roger! No, seriously, go. Go far. OK needs a vacation.

I have been doing more reading than posting lately. Every time I sit down to type, the cat feels compelled to sit in my lap and block the keyboard. She is very disgruntled as I try to finish this. Keeps me warm, though!

I got had today. I went and picked up a mixed variety of hens, all free. Very exciting, considering the mix will make for a gorgeous egg basket.

Now I know why they were free

One...single....lone.....barred rock. Ahhhh!!!!!!

I've had two other BRs, both loud, and always complaining. Got rid of them. Only to get another!!! I will attempt pictures later, of course, if she grants me permission.
