MC, Sturgis is absolutely awesome! Ruby Pug is a chicken Mama too, Chester ignores them, which is probably a good thing!

lindz, love your pics! the kids with dogs is a great shot!

it's hovering at -1, but that non-warming sun is shining bright today - supposed to be clear and sunny with temps hitting 11.

MC chick and dog pictures are adorable! I have seen the ones on Facebook. How cute that your pup is the same way!

Cheeka brrrrr! It was in the teens here and I have to get layered up to go feed the chickens! I really don't envy you!

How many of us wouldn't care if the temperature was in the negative if we didn't have chickens? My M-I-L was saying yesterday that she never thought these temps were a big deal. It is winter, and these are winter temperatures. I told her I understood, but when you have animals outside, you have to care. Not only because the animals may freeze, but because I freeze!

c-c-c-c-c-old here. Waterer froze. Unthawing it took more than pouring hot water over it and banging on it this morning. I want our normal weather back. Alaska, take this polar vortex stuff BACK! No sharesies!

Yesterday, my girls got sprouted grain when I let them out in the morning. Today, they were carrying on in the coop, impatient to be out, exploded out the pop door like little chicken bombs, and all time I was excavating their waterer from the ice, they bocked and cackled and told me to hurry up. I believe I heard the Barred One swear at me when she realized no sprouted feed was coming this morning. Such attitude!

The dog and chicken and kid pictures are adorable! I am trying to rehabilitate my chicken killer. He had baby chicks crawling on him while he had to lay there and tolerate it last night. Family, not food, dog!

When I got the first chicks, Sturgis wanted to see them. I knew I had to give him a chance. It is better to lose one chick while I am watching, than to live with the uncertainty. I believe dogs are a part of the family. If you can't trust them, do something about it.
Anyway, he wasn't being hyper, so I let him sniff a chick while I had a firm hold on it. Next was "free ranging" in the bathroom. Sturgis got to come in. From then on, Sturgis would do anything just to be able to look at the chicks. I even put his dog stairs in front of the brooder. That didn't work since the steps are so small, he couldn't stand at the top to look into the brooder. So he sat in a chair next to it.
When I get the turkeys, they will get to play in the dog run with him. He will love that! Well, until they get bigger than him.

Whoops, IDK what steps you are taking, but be sure the dog has been exercised (and fed. Ha ha) before expecting him to play nice. I assume you are doing that. Mentioning it just in case.

Loved the pics!

Be 10 hours daylight by Monday. Ahh daylight!

I only mind winter when it's icy. I am very afraid of ice. I've been in really terrifying positions perched on a hill (that I can't continue climbing because my tires just spin...) with a too narrow road for turning around - like a 4' ditch on one side and a 20' drop off on the other... and precariously back down without veering off in one direction or the other, hopefully to not get moving too quickly that I can't control the car!

usually I don't even attempt big hills when it's icy, it's only mail after all.....other than that, I like the cold. I feel bad for the back pen occupants, although the repairs I've made lately have made a huge difference! the dome is wonderful...no worries there! but yeah, I would like a nicer climate for them, especially since I have roosters with big combs...

The weather isn't too bad here in North Idaho right now. Its about 32 and cloudy. Normally we would have snow on the ground, but it has been quite dry. The air is stagnant, but the girls can run around and free range. Penny is on the nest, hopefully laying an egg.

I hope my other girls decide to gift me with an egg. Rumples has not given me an egg since her first real one two days ago. Oh well.....
