Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

We got TWO eggs 2day!! The girls got about one hour of supervised free range until a flock of crows started to circle overhead. Then they made a dash for the pen. I gave them treats and locked the pen up for the night. I am seriously considering a pellet rifle. It is sloppy wet here. There is so much runoff that I can hear the water as it moves through my lawn. I even have little streams in the yard. But.... it was a sunny day at 50 degrees and it will be getting warmer and staying sunny. 60 by the weekend!

Mortie.... chicken nipples....hmmmm .... that does not sound right.

Cheeka.... try to stay warm and dry. It is almost Spring!!

As for kitchen colors... my kitchen sink is still the original avocado green from the 70's. I bought it that way and have not changed it even though it makes me cringe.

Ugh Cheeka that sucks. We had 2 decently warm days (40*) but it's supposed to get cold again tomorrow. Why can't it just get warm and stay warm?? Let us know how much you get!

I am bad..... very very very bad.

We went to TSC this evening.

Hubby said I could get 6 chicks.... and only 6.... So, I picked out 3 Ameracaunas (I know EE"S) and 3 Red pullets (probably golden comets). Then he walked off.... and the lady was like "I have these pullets from last week that I really have to get rid of.... Would you like them for $1? " MAJOR TEMPTATION!!!! I told her I had to ask my husband, but I could probably take them if she would drop them down to 50¢.... So, he came walking back up, and was like,"Yea that is too good of a deal to pass up. $3 chicks for 50¢..... I thought there was only 6, until she said she thought she had 15 more in the back but actually there were 20...... SO>>>>>> we came home with a total of 32 chicks! HOLY COW what was I thinking!!!!!???????? Honestly, I figured I would raise them off of lights and then sell them.

It is so hard being little! She is sooooo tired!!!!!

Zonked out! LOL.....

What was I thinking?!?!?! They sprayed them all with BlueKote because they were pecking each other.

Luckily, my aunt-in-law was planning on getting some chicks, so she came and got a bunch of them! This is her first time with chickens, and we figure that (this is going to sound awful) it is better to start with "cheap" chicks so if something happens they aren't losing a bunch of money. So, she came tonight and took 23 of them home. I'm hoping that she does well with them. So, that leaves me with my 3 Ams, 3 Reds, and 3 of the mystery pullets. They are white with a few scattered black spots. I am thinking maybe California whites. I probably should have waited, but its too late now! And HUBBY totally enabled! I may have to rethink getting some Sal.Favs and LF Cochins now...

I do know that I am getting some Cornish rocks in May to raise specifically for the freezer. The good thing with that is that you only have to raise them to about 10-12 weeks.

Today I managed to shovel the large coop (12 X 6) out about 2/3 of the way. I use deep litter. With all the mud, you know it was wet and heavy. I also got the feed bowls, buckets and waterers washed. Tomorrow won't be as cold as I thought (it says it will stay at 40* tonight, go to 44...) Okay, I am looking at the forecast again.
th.gif
44 as a high, with winds at 15-25 MPH with gusts over 40 MPH, and one inch of rain!!! Then the low will be 8*, with an inch of snow and more strong winds. The high for Thursday will be 20*, and then, (LOL!!) it zooms back up to 53!
So, lots of ice (I am SO gonna fall getting to the coop!) tomorrow night, and then it will all melt again Thursday. I won't even tell you about the crazy stuff the following week.
I will be bringing my first poults home in the cold rain. Unfortunately, I have to travel about an hour and a half just to get them.
Cheeka, I know you are getting a lot of snow. I think the snow might be better. Might... Okay, maybe not. I will have ice for a day. You getting another snow storm will last a lot longer. Sorry.

Mortie, sit on your hands! When the chicks begin hatching, they will knock the other eggs around. That is okay. They will survive 3 days without food and water, so you can let them take their time hatching.
It can take 24 hours from pip to zip. Be sure they are not sitting on the turner (if you have one) and be sure there are no dishes of water for them to drown in. A sponge or cloth will keep the humidity up better than anything (except the reservoir, of course).
Lindz, glad you got a good sale, and I see your point about first chicks.

for passing on the addiction hobby to your Aunt in Law...

MC, I'd trade weather... we'll get the inch of rain over the morning, it will turn over to snow by lunchtime and snow continuously til lunch on Thursday. and then it will stay cold for the next 10 days. on one hand, it slows the melt, and prevents flooding. on the other hand. it's staying cold.

everyone I talk to is depressed. this winter was rough and it needs to end. the increasing daylight is enough to keep me feeling good, but I am tired. my yard is saturated with water which means it will be a skating rink by Thursday anyway... got my ice cleats and ski pole ready for chicken chores...!

More cold weather! More snow, Cheeka!!

This has been a historically weird/bad winter. Spring is under way here. Is is warm and windy tonight (earthquake weather). Sounds nice, but it is drying everything out so quickly. We are done with rain for the foreseeable future. Hubby mowed this weekend for the first time in about a year. Couldn't believe the mower started. At this rate we might not have to mow again until fall (if we're lucky enough to get rain

2 Cochin eggs yesterday. They are so small. Not much bigger than the Serama egglets. None today, but 5 big eggs. And Biscuit is cured of her nasty vent gleet. Yogurt therapy worked!

Sending you warm springy thoughts.

Moved the RIR rooster in with the new girls (Delaware and BR's) Let the sex links begin. Moved the Comets and BO's into the broody coop. Roger is moving to Key West (according to her) and yes I will buy her a First Class airline ticket and 50 pounds of scratch....and take her to the airport .......and send her alimony.......and hope she gets too close to a alligator

Like this close?

I took a trip to the keys this fall and was able to get a little too close to some gators. I loved it!

I'm going to lock down tomorrow morning. I want to give the air cells a little more time to get bigger. They haven't grown a lot in the last few days that I can tell. This is pretty nerve wracking! I might candle today though I'm not sure I see the point. The blue eggs are impossible to see through at this point, all I see is basically blackness. Unless I see movement there's no way to tell if the babies are alive in there or not and it's not like I'm going to toss any eggs right now since they were fine a few days ago, I'm sure they wouldn't explode....so they're all going into lockdown anyway. Still, I don't plan to hatch again so this might be my last chance to see a baby chicken inside an egg for a long, long time so I guess I'll give it a shot for posterity.
