Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Congrats on the chicks!!:jumpy :jumpy :jumpy

Cheeka, congrats on the egg number! That is great!

Now,, for my news. Remember the EE I have spent a YEAR complaining about? The little stinker laid an egg! :th It was April the last time she laid! It is green, and very odd shaped, but it is her's!
Whoo hoooo

This is the best I can get it to show up. At least you can see the shape. IF I get another egg from her ( I swear I am going to rename her Roger) I will put them in the incubator. The Ameraucana roo is the one that mates the most. I am hoping to get some blue layers.

hooray! maybe she'll actually start laying this year??? my EE Blu has only laid 4 Eggs since the end of summer, got one from her today - totally torpedo shaped and the only khaki/olive green I get, so distinctive... I hope she picks up again, she's 2 in April, and was laying a good 4 eggs a week last year.

Splish (her late sister was Splash, they are splash EE) is only one. She was just starting to lay when I got her in late February. They had no excuse to stop laying.
I am wondering if it is coincidence that when I switched the feed to Agway egg layer feed, I began getting good egg numbers about two days later?

I am pretty sure it was just the longer/warmer days. I don't know that I want to go back to Purina now, JIC!

Cheeka, I love the shadow pic. I started using straw in my run (it's covered) after what you said about the nice soil. One more bit of rain maybe on Wed, after which I plan to clean it out. The flies are already horrible this year (and lots of people are having trouble with mites) so I may clean it out earlier just to be safe.

It's black mold you really have to worry about with chickens. Aspergillus gets in their lungs and they just fade away.

vintagegem, are you getting chicks or started pullets in May? What breeds? Any roosters? You will love them, I'm sure of it. It's nice to see a fellow dinosaur online.

MC, sounds like a lot of work! Hope your toes feel better soon.

Clindz, I'm thinking it's about time for an updated Rawley pic.

Is he bigger?

Scrambles, do you have any breeds that are known to go broody? One of my Ameraucanas gets really broody, and the breeder says that most of the birds from that particular line do too. She's too big to set Seramas, so I've been trying to think what kind of eggs if I let her hatch out this year. Maybe Marans? or good Welsummers? I want a different color egg. (Presuming I get any girls!)

Howzit going Whoops?!

Hi, I'm getting started pullets in May, thought it best for my first foray into chickendom!, no roosters though, just want eggs not chicks and from what I've seen so far roosters seem like a lot of work

You will be getting a rooster before you know it. You will succumb to the cuteness of chicks, and want to see yours being born. Or, a hen will go broody, and you will not be able to break her. You will not want to have to spend another week looking for someone with fertile eggs for a broody, so you will get a rooster (not a big deal) and wish you had done it sooner.
