The more remote... the better for me. DH... not so much. I like to have animals and bonfires without complaining neighbors.W4W, I haven't. mainly bc when you look into postal jobs, they want you NOW. not in 3 months or next year when the house sells... and they can't hold the job for that long. best to wait til I have a signed contract. it takes a few weeks to over a month to get to closing anyway... puts the pressure on me at the last minute, but that's how it works. they'll tell me where they have openings and I can choose what/where I want. just needs to be rural. not just for the roosters sake, for mine too. I have lived so remotely for 13+ years now. I can't rejoin civilization by having close neighbors. I'd go nuts.
W4W... does your Welsummer lay dark brown eggs??
Yep.. some places are too darn cold. Idaho isn't so bad. I love the snow but since I've had chickens.... my thoughts about that have changed. On the other hand... We cannot do the heat. I melt! You can always put more clothes on... there is only so much you can (legally) take off.Scrambles! I have a nice large fire pit out back, great bonfire memories here... one night a few deer came out to feed within 30 feet of us and the fire. they were so accustomed to me... I'll miss that about this place, but I'll find something as good if not better! the only thing that is rough about living here is the extreme length of time for extreme cold. I don't mind it for me. I can dress for it and it never seems as bad as I think it will be when I step out. it's so hard on the flock, particularly the bantam boys. I need a different setup for them if I am going to stay in a cold climate.![]()
The one egg on the right looks almost lavender. Very pretty eggs.....It's more the color of terracotta, sometimes with dark speckles. It gets much lighter later in the season.
Welsummer egg front and center. It's darker than that this year. The other brown eggs in the pic are not as dark as they look.
Grace is a hatchery chick who almost died from an umbilical hernia. She took a long time to lay and has spurs. Kind of skittish
