Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Quote: I think I will let cheeka figure out what "ROGER" is. There is a tag under her wing that says "Made in China". And a expiration date on her bottom that says "Expires 11-13-2013". Only response I get from the hatchery is in regard to their "No Return Policy" The letters I get from PETA refer to my "Peacock" that is being abused. And Animal Control is trying to make me pay for 150 pounds of cat food they say she ate while incarcerated. So I honestly don't know ...

So I was going to save my first egg and blow it out to make a Christmas ornament but my husband made an omelet while I was at church!!!! Can't blame him cause I had it in the bowl but I never imagined he'd make something egg based. I shouldn't complain cause he's so good about feeding himself if I don't make dinner but I'm sad!! :(

aww CLindz, that is a bummer... but you should still find the smallest egg you have, and blow that one. Old BH would try to talk me into saving all kinds of shells, the first one I do have, but he said I should keep the first green, the first blue, the biggest, the darkest... I'd have eggshells everywhere! I only have the first. but I do have 16 Marans' eggs that I have to blow out for a friend... one of the eggs I collected today is a whopper! I'll crack it tomorrow - I'm still hoping for another triple yolk... I never ever expected that so I just set it up for still photos... to catch all those yolks spilling out in a video would have been great!

Roger will be happy here, she lays more often than Fannie aka Bakery. I've yet to see her on the nest, have seen the other BR and all the rest... Frankly, I think she is a Dud. she's so huge and she has the thickest legs! I suppose that's in her favor, for carrying all the bulk... but it's an indicator of non-laying. and Frankly... I'm thinking about changing her name again. to Frank(ie). but that would have to be a secret. I have a lovely Aunt Frankie who might not appreciate the humor of a super fat, lazy, non laying hen... with her name...

Are your chickens older when you notice the thin shells? Any particular time of year? It was last spring that this same chicken had problems. After the Vit D treatment, it was resolved.
...

My mob has a strange aversion to carrots, raw or cooked they're a no-go
Well it seems the chickens most prone to it are the larger egg layers like red stars and orpingtons (perhaps the australorps also related to orpingtons I suppose)

Since their egg production is greater it places larger demands on them to produce. None of my chickens are very old all under 2 years of age.

Carrots are always raw and shredded fine like slaw and introduced at an early enough age and mixed with other good things they like - be it raisins, tortilla slivers, old discard salad greens from the kitchen, or with a hunk of flock block (usually made fresh from rolled oats and lots of exciting things) (just search flock block recipes if you've never baked one).

Once they have been keyed to recognize raw carrots for the awesome food it is they will home to it like a ravenous carrot-seeking scavenger. Makes the yolks nice and dark orange and tasty!

it's the most gorgeous partly cloudy day! I've been in a great mood since I cracked my eyes open! probably helped that the pups were extra mushy and snuggly and the weather was the topper. I had to pick up feed on my way home and they have chicks. BR's and NHR's. I was really good and didn't even try to go back inside to take a pic of the bunch! I was so proud of myself for resisting that temptation that I treated myself to a soft serve twistie cup of ice cream!

now, I have blown my collection of Marans eggs and cooked up the scrambled eggs for the flock, just letting it cool so I could pop on here and say Hi... and I'm heading out for some free range time!

I am taking a break. Damp. Cold....ugh.

Tried to do some work on the coop but long story short, it was a total bust. Everything went totally wrong so I gave up and came in to play computer games instead. And I had to lay on the cold, ****, muddy ground so I'm a little moist in some places...

My aunt has it bad!!!! She brought me some duck eggs to stick in the incubator. So, since I am going to be setting some Sal.Fav eggs next week, they should all hatch together... At least they is what I am hoping...

When I went down there earlier, there were already 15 eggs in the nests.... I forgot my bucket, so they are still down there....
I still haven't seen another egg from the BCM.... I'm not sure what is going on with her!!!! She laid on 3/30 then nothing since. Heading out to feed and gather the eggs now! Talk to you guys later!

oh boy free range was a blast! only 2 hours, but that was enough... the scrambled eggs were a hit, of course... but I didn't feed it to them like I normally do, just giving it up... I tossed a small bit across the yard and watched them run! over and over. in all different directions. so funny.

so far, I only have 10 Eggs for the day, there's still a little over an hour left, but I don't think I'll get too many more.
