TWO eggs... TWO eggs... I got TWO eggs today... and ONE chick!! The girls were very unhappy about the coop door being blocked off, but after and hour of struggling, they finally settles into the dog crate. Today I let them free range all day to make amends. Smoke laid and egg in my ATV and Penny eventually laid hers in the crate. I was very happy to see the chick. I was hoping for Lavender, but there are 4 eggs left. I can hear movement in the nest, but I cannot figure out what it is. Its a tapping sound. Zip maybe?? Rumples has stopped growling at me. OH... I discovered lice on Smoke. I put DE on her and Si. I will do Penny tomorrow. I assume that Rumples has them too. When can I dust her with DE and what about the chicks? Is DE good or should I use something else? I did spray the coop with Poultry Protector.
Congrats on the new baby!
Hopefully tomorrow you will have some new little Easter chicks.
As for the lice (or mites?), I would get on that asap. I have a gruesome memory of a lice infested wren's nest, and the two almost fledglings were sucked dry and died. It was horrible. There are some articles on BYC that have good info. When my little rooster got fowl mites I tried DE (didn't work) and I tried poultry dust (didn't work), and poultry protector spray (didn't work). To be fair, I think I had a lot of trouble with application. The rooster didn't like being manhandled and I was worried about overdosing him and breathing the stuff in. Finally, I followed a tip to use Frontline (for cats, I think), and one drop on the skin near his vent cleared it up quickly. No more mites. (Large chickens would get 2 or 3 drops.)
Since then I have read some negative things about DE. People say it will cause respiratory problems in chickens. I dunno.
There doesn't seem to be any evidence from anyone, but the bag does warn not to breathe it in. I still use it in the nest boxes under the bedding and I know people who add it to the feed. Haven't heard any reports of problems.
Then I've heard different things about the Frontline. Use the dog stuff, not the cat kind. Use the Frontline Plus, don't use the Frontline Plus. (I think used Frontline Plus for cats.) I am a little paranoid about poisons and medications. It seemed safer to me to use a single and small dose of something that worked well than to cover that poor bird, and myself, with poultry dust every few days. Also, I was so relieved that something finally worked. (You may have better success with dusting if you have lice rather than mites. Feather mites don't suck blood, so Frontline won't work for that kind of mites/lice.)
Ivermectin, while no longer an effective wormer, will still work well against fowl mites, red mites, and chewing lice.
A lice treatment for caged birds (from a pet store?) might be a safe way to go if you have to treat the chick. I don't know much about this. I think someone mentioned there was a Frontline for birds, but ??
Finding out what type of parasite you have is important so you know how to treat the environment. Sometimes you have to remove the bedding, etc.
And that's all I can remember. And I probably confused you even more!
sorry
