Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Been a busy day! Built new coop and larger fenced in area for or chickens today. As it was getting dark, a few of them were trying to get back to old coop lol.

My girls are at 22 weeks and still no eggs?
Maybe they don't know where to nest ? Or their nest box?

You can try putting a fake egg or golf ball in the nest boxes. I have 4 boxes and they all want the same nest box. Silly girls....

Did someone question whether EE lay brown eggs? I have 5 EE and only 3 lay blue/green . The other two lay atan and a cream....

Yes ... they can lay colors other than the green/blue eggs. Brown, tan, cream, white.

Aaarg, so hard to wait! Most of mine started after 22 weeks and they were early March chicks too, so had all spring to grow.

It's good to put decoy eggs in the nests to give newbies the idea of where to lay. I used golf balls for mine. Plastic Easter eggs work too.

23 weeks old red comb and wattle a lot of squatting. Also they started going in and out if the nest box/coop. How long do you think until my first egg.

Congratulations!!! That was fast. I was going to reply that they would lay soon and they did!

Last night, DH and I finished the last chicken project of the year(maybe). We made Rumples' pen a permanent one. I left the lattice on the right side so that Little Bit can jump over it to be with her mom at night.

We put a real door in to make things easier for me and it looks better. We also used the last of the chicken fencing for a wall, because the scrap stuff kept catching me and cutting me.

Rumples should be happy in there. I will post pictures when the lighting gets better.

I now know why Rumples has stopped laying eggs... she is molting. There are black feathers everywhere. Whew.... mystery solved. I am glad that she is molting sooner than later. Smoke molted last December.

I thought she would freeze her naked little butt off.

Here is a picture of Rumples permanent pen. Its not much, but she barely uses 10% of it. Also a picture of part of the pen for the other girls.

You can see Rumples next to the door. That is where she sits all day long. At night, she hobbles to the other corner to sleep with Little Bit.

Well, my ameracauna girls turned 23 or 24 weeks today, no eggs yet. Man they are really holding out. Maybe they're waiting for me to get home? I'll be home a week from tomorrow.
