As you know, I am collecting eggs around 6:30 in the morning. The chicks will be six weeks in a few days. Since they are already out in the coop, nature has feathered them out faster. However, with this cold front coming in I wanted to wait a few more days until I removed the divider ( which has been acting as more of a wind block than an adult block) and turned off the heat lamp.
I was standing in the duck pen, trying to figure out why they were being so odd this morning. I looked through the wire, and didn't see a single chick! They were not making any noise, though that is always a good thing. LOL, especially since all those little cockerels crowing would be a bad thing!
Anyway, I went in to investigate. No predator is going to get 18 good-sized chicks, and not clear out the whole entire coop!
They weren't on the roost with the adults, they were not in the chickens' nest boxes. I gave up looking, and went back to get the duck egg while I pondered on the situation. I stuck my hand into the duck nest box, but could not find an egg anywhere! I moved my hand to the left, I moved my hand to the right, I lifted up and even held one. I could not find a duck egg underneath all those chicks!
