Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

frozen waterers all around this morning. sun is shining and it is beautiful, but it is cold!

putting in a new thermostat this morning, the ancient thing has finally crapped out, so I've had little oil filled radiators stationed around the house since Saturday, Sunday night, it decided to work for a few hours and I thought I might just make it to the end of the cold season, but nope.

after that, I have a bunch of paperwork to send off for my return to work, wait for UPS to get here (probably around 2) with the Jeep title, dash over to the DMV to get it registered, or it can wait until tomorrow morning, but I would rather just get it done. I will go to pick up the Jeep on Thursday, as my (step) daughter has an important interview for a big promotion tomorrow... and really can't get away for those few hours it will take, but she has Thursday arranged to work from home, so... it will be like an extended lunch for her to take me to the city.

all the kissing... they are always somewhere between damp and sopping wet. glad they love each other so much!

I got the plates for the Jeep! hooray hooray!! the dealership still left some blanks on the paperwork, but the incredibly nice lady at the DMV said the Title Bureau can straighten it out, likely it will be sent back to the dealership, returned to the Title Bureau and then mailed to me. she said it would likely be 90 days before I get it back. normally it's 6 weeks. who cares! I have my plates, my registration and everything I need! I'm picking it up on Thursday - can't wait!!!!!!!!!!

on a more stressful note, it wasn't just the thermostat. it was the circulator too. this is the last Winter for that old furnace. kind of bummed that I just spent over $15K on a car, and will probably need to spend about that much for a new furnace and installation. but the old one will continue to run well for the next month until I don't need to use it anymore... and the company I use to service it sells them, has financing and will credit today's repairs so I'll get some money back, and they'll buy back a few parts that are only about a month old. still... it burns me. outside of the mortgage, I have zero debt. I hate to buy anything on credit.

Congrats on (almost) getting your jeep! I guess if the furnace dies on a really cold night, you can always take the whole crew out and crank up the heat in the jeep!

Will the new furnace be a different type of fuel? It seems like many are moving away from heating oil over in the cold part of the Country.(No one heats with oil where I live).

I'm supposing that it will be oil, because there is no natural gas up here... I could get a furnace that runs on propane, which, if you use as fuel for heating the home, is several dollars per gallon cheaper than if you use it for only your stove or only your hot water... I don't know much about kerosene except for the small heaters - and how danged expensive kero is...

I See!

We have Natural Gas almost everywhere. Since it is not very cold usually, those without it use either propane or a pellet stove. Some even get by heating with electricity.

It is very different here since we are more concerned with cooling down in the Summer.

electric heat is by far the most expensive here in upstate NY. if I were to use pellet stoves, I would need at least 2. this is a fairly big house @ 1900 square feet, and not laid out so that the warmth would spread properly/evenly... I don't know... the sales guy will be here on Friday to discuss various options. it's very cold here for at least 6 months and the other 6 months it's rarely hot enough to bother with an air conditioner. there is usually a fairly steady breeze, so opening windows, and maybe a fan or two is enough.

I really miss electric heat. I don't understand my oil heat, and don't really want to. It was terrifying last month to discover that my tank was literally empty, and that I hadn't realized it was that low. I had about 3 gallons in the tank. I usually start flipping out when it's down to about 15 gallons.
Despite the cost, I would rather just go to electric.

We have propane heat and it's very expensive here so we rely almost fully on wood stoves in the winter. We can get the house to 80 in the dead of winter it's great! I love walking around feeling stone cold radiators and knowing I'm not spending a dime on heat...tho my house is trashed from the amount of wood we have to carry in...
