Can you do the Barred Rock Dance?
It's a step-kick-fluff-bawk kind of prance.
We do it well and we're very proud
Proud yes indeed and very loud!
We're even louder when our flockmates lay
We're quick to point out and even say
Look what I did! no it was me!
That's someone else's, that one "peewee"
What's that you say, I don't lay "green"?
Watch me Dance... Until I have seen
That you are Hypnotized, dazed by my style
and tell everyone it's been me all the while!
I laid them all, you will believe
and only with Pie will the strain be relieved!
Indulge me with Pie and I'll Dance all day
Step-Kick-Fluff-Bawk prance away!

Well done. Sounds like those little jerks of mine. Must be common for BR's

They Are Normal Birds For Most The Day
They Pick And Scratch And Then They Lay
Some Are Are Pure Breeds Some Are Mutts
Just Add Treats..... They All Become Nuts
Drop A Bread Crumb And They Want More
Each Crumb Better Than The One Before
Hey That Ones Mine I Want It Back
Run If You Can We Will All Attack
Scratch Makes Then Goofy Gives Them Woodpecker Head
And You Know **** Well They Are All Well Fed
Grass Is Gold Without A Doubt
We Better Eat Fast He Might Run Out
But What Bothers Me Most And Is So Unfair
IS One Large Bug For Them All To Share
Grab It And Run And Then Face Defeat
It Was Worth The Effort For The Ultimate Treat
Then The Treats Are Gone In Blink Of A Eye
Heaven For A Chicken Will Be Unlimited Pie

For two weeks, not a word was said
Two long weeks! I could have been dead!
The chickens, they laid, and I must boast,
Four every day, and five on most!
But now I get only three
I have to wonder what the problem could be
But reading these posts, it makes me cry
How have I forgotten to give them pie?
No pumpkin, no apple, no raisins, no oatmeal
"Hey, Mom!' they cry, "What's the deal?"
So I will go to the kitchen, and cook up a treat
And go to the coop, and admit defeat
The chickens they will get what they need
And I will be a good mom again indeed.

Why is everyone talking about alcohol? I am trying to catch up on two weeks worth of posts, and both of the active threads I participate in are talking about drunk chickens! Of course, Drunken Chicken is a good meal, and it is a shame to wait until the poor things are dead. Can you imagine getting the chickens drunk before processing them? That is the best way to get them to come to the stump willingly! keep a big bowl of beer nearby, and they will pass out drunk before the deed is done!

Seriously, the other thread was talking about those of us that like to sit in the coop while we drink an alcoholic drink or two.
So here is what has been happening; For the past week or so I am getting four or five eggs a day. Then Thursday I got three eggs, and a sticky mess. Not sure if it was a shell-less egg or a thin shell, but it seems like a hen tried to kick it out of the box since it was wet and sticky on the lip. The following two days have just been three eggs. Not that I am complaining! But I am a little sad about it.
I have had two hens that have been sneezing periodically for about five months. After a lot of worrying and research, I am confident that it is just a "thing" for them. Either they are more sensitive to dust, or their sinuses are not properly formed. The thing that is bothering me now, is that a BR is sneezing now. No discharge. But THAT is bothering me. I may quarantine her (and the other two to keep her company) but the trick is catching them, and making sure I have the right ones!
Then there is Red. He is a cockerel that has developed an attitude. I have carried him around a few times, so I have been close enough to look in his eyes. I didn't see anything wrong, but I have been noticing that he body slams. I thought it was just me, and he did it because he knew better than to peck me. Now I am noticing that he is never using his beak to correct a hen or pullet. He uses his side. He no longer tries to mate at all, and I think it is his right eye that he can't see out of.

Any ideas?

A chicken may occasionally sneeze in a dusty environment...if it is happening alot it could be disease...but since its not obvious who is sneezing I don't think its a worry. Eggs broken and/or missing points to a predator. Rule out snakes and rats, then make sure its not a chicken. I thought I had an egg eater chicken but when i isolated her she kept a perfect clutch of eggs. If its a predator, the hens will alert you by making alot of fuss about it. As mine did when i finally found a six foot rat snake gulping down eggs.......ug. meanwhile, look for one inch holes and keep an eye out...everything eats eggs...especially rats, and they will carry them off.

Spot wants to join the Barred Rock Dance too! It would give her a new hobby. She is such a busybody. Follows me around like a dog and tries to trip me and is often so busy busybodying that she forgets to lay eggs. She's sly, though, because yesterday, when there were only a paltry 4 eggs, she made sure to lay one to get the credit! She's in the coop right now trying to get me to believe that an egg is on the way, but I know better. She's just being a nosy busybody checking on the other 3 girls who are setting.
