should i use sand or dirt in the run?

hi all
my 2 girls are on compost but i want to change it and was just wondering if i could use builder's sand this i think is a bit of everything as in size of stuff if you get what i mean lol.
the reason for them being on compost is that my garden is all slabbed so i need them on something as i dont want there feet to burn when it's to hot.
they do enjoy being on this but i wold like to try something bit cleaner if there is anything lol.

The area that you are putting it in seems pretty wet so I would vote for sand or small stone, we orginally had sand in our run but because we get so much rain and the area the run was in seemed to be a low spot, within six month we had a mud pit. Make sure the water is draining away from the run. We are moving our run this year and putting gravel down instead, because our area is just way to wet for even sand.
