Should I warn neighbor that dog might get shot?

the only think I disagree with in this comment, is how you ask why you should have to spend more money just because of the dog-
It isn't and will never be just about the dog. If a dog can get your birds, so can just about any other predator. The dog owner is responsible for keeping their dog penned up, right? Why aren't you responsible for keeping your birds secure to begin with? They're open to anything. Thank the dog for showing you a weakness in your system.
(maybe not quite, but hopefully you see my point.)
I don't care how elaborate of a coop or how simple of a coop one can afford. It's not the chicken keepers responsibility to keep others dogs from their property.

If one can only afford a simple coop and run with chicken wire securing the birds, is it their fault the chickens died because of some irresponsible dog owner?

And don't put coyote, fox, coon in the same category. They are wild, the dog has a owner that by law, is responsible for keeping under control.

Not they, me...
If my pet got loose and never returned, I think it would be easier emotionally then watching my pet decline and having to make that decision we all dread making.
Oh okay, I misread.
This is still down to the owner, I would prefer to have my animal and make the decision for them, and I would prefer to be there when they die, or at the very least be able to bury and grieve them. I would prefer to know if they have been killed, rather than continue searching for them and never knowing what happened. I believe the pet owner deserves to be able to grieve their animal. SSS is just dishonesty, how can it be seen as responsible.
Anyway, I'm going to step away from this discussion because it doesnt seem to be going anywhere

But it IS their responsibility to keep their birds safe from *any* predator.
If I couldnt keep my birds safe from predation, I would expect heartbreak.
And I agree, responsibility lands on the dog owner for not keeping their animal under control-but I believe there is sometimes responsibility on the owner of the poultry too.

I think this thread has run it's course.

Shoot the dog or don't. Everyone has to make that choice. For someone to condemn me and call me a barbarian for shooting a predator, yes a dog activity killing my livestock is a predator, is just wrong. It's easy to say, just get electric fencing, or do this or that. But everyone has a limit of what they can build or spend. It doesn't mean the person who can't afford such stuff is at fault because a predator killed their livestock. It seems those that preach "it's our job to keep our animals safe" only applies to the livestock owner, but not to the dog owners who are not keeping their dogs safe.. kind of a double standard, don't ya think?

Don't like killing critters, don't. Come into my property a kill my livestock, I've got the tools and am willing to use them to make sure the attack stops.

I may have missed something here, but why would they need to put their pet down?
some areas in the US have very strict livestock protection laws: if your dog gets loose and chases anything considered livestock it can be shot on the spot. Usually, that is utilized with an eye toward cows or sheep, some horse owners had to resort to that.
For the private chicken owner, it might feel it is overkill, but we do sink a lot of money into our birds, and by law, for good or bad, they are livestock!
it does create economic hardship for us should a stray enter our perimeter. Fix fences, replace lost birds etc....plus of course the mental pain of losing a named bird.

Sadly, we have become used to those tabloid type stories on how the mean farmer shot poor poochy, he was just playing with the baby cows.
the mean rich horse owner, just shot poochy.....and the mean which down the road is mad about poochy killing a couple of her dumb chickens....
while Poochy is left on his own, either thrown out of the house to wander, or broke loose from a chain.

However
I have had my dog get away from me, and a search of the neighborhood remained fruitless. She came back an hour or so later (and I repaired my fence after)

People actively looking for the dog is a good sign.

I had to repeatedly call animal controll on a dog owner. The dog was locked up all day and after work they would let him out to his own devices. At the beginning I set off bottle rockets to keep him away but once he discovered the chickens nothing would keep him away. Finally they got weary of paying I guess. It has been about a year now and he has not returned. I would hate to have to shoot an animal. Especially a pet. Personally I would prefer to put a few bb's in the owners butt for not taking care of their dog.

I may be in the minority here, but causing a dog extreme pain is an extremely old fashioned and not so good way to teach a dog anything. I would probably be more angry if my dog were shot and in bad pain for hours until found and treated, than if it were shot lethally and killed fast. I dont know if anyone will agree with me on that, but that's how I'd feel. Depending where the dog is shot, even a BB gun can cause fatal complications and end up causing a slow death if not treated quickly.
Either way, these situations should be prevented by the dog's owner, who is the one at fault.
I'd much rather eliminate the problem entirely, by swift execution, but when you're limited to your options, even though the state law would pre-empt the local township ordinance, it's just not worth the legal hassle of having to go through the court system and then have an arrest on your record that follows you everywhere. So, the dog goes home in pain, and its owner realizes that he/she's been somewhere he/she shouldn't have been, because he/she was running loose in a jurisdiction that forbids it. Lesson learned for both owner AND dog.

Believe me, I was accused of shooting a dog because it was attacking my turkeys. Turns out it was a different dog that got shot by someone else, but at the same time, a dog WAS attacking my turkeys, got one, killed it in front of the people who ended up accusing me of shooting a dog, the sheriff showed up, I explained the situation, had no idea of what got to my turkeys. The dog that was attacking my turkeys was observed by the next-door neighbor, and he pointed her out to me. She showed up the next day, ready to take another one of them, but my neighbor and I were standing in my yard, talking about the events that had happened, and he saw her... said 'THAT'S the one that did it!' We got pictures of her and I gave them to the sheriff deputy who was handling the complaint. He knew the dog, and went to the owner. Never saw the dog or the owner again in our little township... they vacated. Especially since I gave the deputy a demand for compensation of $300... the amount it would have cost to replace the turkey, as its name was 'Thanksgiving'.
