Show me inside and outside of your homemade coops

Everything was wrong, nests above roosts and not enough room for nests and roosts in the same place. I eventually converted it into a roosting only area which works fine. I could have 15 birds roosting in there but nothing else.

Haha. I didn't notice the nests were above the roosts. that is true. I'm sure the nests became beds if they were able to fit into them. :lau We all learn some lessons the hard way. I had let my chickens into the garden after sowing seeds and they ate nearly every seedling... I thought if the garden nursery can have a few chickens running around why couldn't I? Their plants were not seedlings and were off the ground on racks... :he

Very clever and charming! Love the use of your areas/local materials. Love the well built useful function and blend for Colo country. Bravo!

Awe. Thanks. It was a bit tricky to piece things together at times, but we didn't purchase any lumber for either build. The duck coop was built from shipping pallets/flats. The chicken coop was salvaged wood as well. (and things from the firewood pile)

I love that!!! Yes, I bet it hurt your head a few times :) I like working with natural materials myself and know it can be a challenging work of art. Plus working in small spaces... ugh. Last post I forgot to add that I though your girl was beautiful :love how many do you have and how do you fend off predators in your area?

I must give my husband a lot of credit for helping to turn my drawing and chicken coop requests into a real functional coop. He dove right into this project with me, so even though I do the chicken keeping, he forever gets to have his fair share of eggs! The girl in my picture was broody at the time and seemed to be broody more often than not last year :barnie, I currently have 4 chickens and 6 ducks. They both have fully fenced runs which included welded wire over head and either skirting or buried fencing. It's really the only way with how many coyotes and hawks we have. My biggest regret is that the chicken run is not walk in! I think when we share our home builds it might be good to mention both our favorite feature and our biggest regret. I regret that the chicken run is not walk in!!!! I can live with the fact that I cannot walk in the coop, it's easy to clean and I only have 4 chickens, but the run is a nightmare.

I can't wait to see more builds from others, always an inspiration.

Oh my gosh... broody Brahma. Mine went broody twice last year. She was only 6-7 months her first time. I broke her both times fairly easily.
I have been dying to share a story because I think it is awesome adorable. We have many wild chickens on the islands and down at our pasture people have dropped off a few domestic roos they don't want. Roos mate with the feral Bantam-esq hens and that is how I got my two rescues. Their mom got ate by cat and I found and adopted them. They are my best girls, super friendly, smart and resourceful and great layers of smaller eggs. One went broody 7 days ago. I let her sit and then stole 2 fertilized eggs that I was sure were 'Mr. Biggles" (a handsome Cinnamon), from a nest at pasture. They hatched in two days and my hen is adorably in love with them and they her and I love seeing her so happy and eating again. Poor Brahma wants to steal her babies. I will definitely let Brahma hatch out some eggs if timing is right. Jan 11 19 011.jpg Jan 11 19 025.jpg
