These are our 4 chicks under the 25 watt red bulb

Initially, I had the chicks in a 30 gal tub. I saw that wasn't even going to work after day 1. They are in the large dog crate now and love it. They have a roost, sand to play in, and hanging waterer/feeder. Plus, plenty of room to run/flap around.

10 pullets who are 6 days old, 4 black stars, 3 golden comets, and 3 BR

Not the best photos

I've used the dog crates, until I got the idea of using the old console stereos that we all used to have. You can usually find them free on Craigslist or Freecycle. You have to gut them, put down vinyl tile on the floor and the lower sides. I replaced the old cloth from where the speakers were and replaced it with screen. I attached a ceramic light fixture or you can attach a heat lamp to the top of one corner.

They look great in the house too for when you have new hatchlings.

I also use old cribs that people are throwing out or playpens.

Here are some pics of one of mine.

I started off with a birdcage for the first couple weeks

Then last night upgraded to the dog crate

They are in the house, in the den. The lamp is attached twice to an old chair next to the cages.

Imp- My cats are jockeying for position under the heatlamp too.

When I'm not here supervising the cats are not allowed in this room. They cannot be trusted.

I don'tknow if the photo will work or not but here is my brooder....works very well. I eventually put cardboard along the bottom to stop the shavings from going all over the place.. you live you learn
