We have two brooders after they hatch and dry off we place them in the wooden brooder, which also has a wire mesh top, 1st picture and waiting for this weekends hatch. When they are two weeks old they go into the Dog Cage brooder. 2nd & 3rd pictures. After four weeks they go into the coop brooder to get used to the coop and their new family.

Trust me, you need the wire. Though it looks too small, the chicks can and will get through. We have cardboard completely covering our dog crate brooder but in the little space in between i have seen them get themselves stuck there.

Hi everyone - I didn't use a crate but a dog carrier (medium sized). I took the top and front door off, but some hay in it and the bedding from the hens box (she hatched them herself) and they just love it! I was worried as I didn't have another hen box that I could detach from the three I have made up, and I had two chicks hatch this morning...so the dog carrier worked perfectly. It is amazing how creative everyone is on this forum. I have picked up some great ideas.

This is our dog crate baby brooder, there is cardboard over the top and sides, on the front we just lean another piece of cardboard over. We put some bubble wrap over as they were cold, but now they are fine and we have taken the bubble wrap off. At the left, the thing with all the chicks pecking at it is the feeder and the thing opposite from that on the right is the waterer. There are two logs in there, and they have a little feed on them. I put them in there to keep the chicks occupied because I had a bully chick. It is fine now, so we are assuming his/her pecking was due to boredom. In the back, you cannot really see it, we have hay for them to lay on. Often when they get frightened the will all run over there and huddle on the hay. On the floor we used dog training pads (we had almost a whole pack left over from our dog, Bonnie) they are so easy to clean, we just roll them up and throw them away, them put a new one in. I believe our dog crate is a medium one. I hope you like mmy dog crate baby brooder!

I know the picture isn't great, but it is super hard (im starting to think impossible) to take a good pic with our red brooder lamp.

Everybody seems happy. After four days I moved both lights on top of the cage. They are two 100 watt bulbs and 15 peeps. Now at three weeks old they fill up about 25% of the space.

homesteadinmamma, how did this setup work for you?I've the same size crate/carrier and chicks coming this weekend, and I'm wondering now if the crate will be big enough for 5 chicks until they're ready to go out in late June?
