kitty litter might plug them up if they ate it like grit.... pdz can be used as grit by the chickens according to the web site. I use it in a 4x4 huddle box that too many chickens want to roost in... and not spread out into the other huddle box.

Picking up a box is easier and faster for me...instead of scooping through something to dig poop out.

And those boxes are just plain cardboard (some ink but whatever) so they can go strait into the compost. I like this idea. I could get such boxes at Aldi all day every day. So simple.

Good point on the kitty litter - I don't want to shut down my chickens' GI tracts. That would be bad! This PDZ sounds too good to be true. I may have to give it a go. Wondering if I could mix PDZ into sand for a more cost effective floor covering in the coop... I might put it under my quail cages too then since it is so renowned for keeping odors down.

I had tried plastic containers at first but I'd have to end up scraping them out. The cardboard just works so well for me.
Should the grocery store ever stop using these type boxes I'd be sad. I highly doubt they ever will though. I actually prefer the Gatorade brand boxes because they are the thickest.

Basically I have a 2x4 roost with a shelf below it. On the shelf I use these... I pick them up free at the grocery store. I put a little bit of hay in them and change them out weekly. Takes me all of one whole minute. View attachment 1642797

Here's the one in the turkey coop. Nothing fancy, just a 2 x 6 held up with 4 x 4 posts and a layer of plywood under it all to catch the poo.

I'll find the pictures of the chicken coop ones since they're a lot nicer.

My compost is a trash bag.

I did use hay with the plastic containers too but poop would still fall through and get stuck.

These are the ones in the chicken coop. No obviously this was during our building process and not since they've been in there lol. Just plywood covered with cheap linoleum. We don't put litter or bedding on them, just scrape them off.
