i don't know about whether it affects the confidence or not but keeping them together depends on the individual birds imo. I was able to keep miners together til about 6 months. Rubles a little less. Leipers about 5 months, then one of them wouldn't let the other stags eat and was whooping them when they got close. Penny's and whitehackles 9 weeks, 1 dead 3 beat to h*ll and back. One stood out easily to me. I think it may affect their confidence more if one gets beat up young. Like shubin said it would obviously work better if they are free ranging though. Id rather not, I have pullets that I take to the other side of the yard and witching minutes she is back in between pens trying to fight through the wire. Depends on the birds, not created equal and some mature faster than others and some probably aint worth feeding.
Thanks, I should have been more clear. They get along fine most of the time and free range most of it too. I agree, once they reach a certain age they should be separated for their own safety. But is there a lasting effect on their confidence? It seems like once they mature, they are all pretty much confident, but do any of you notice some that never gain that confidence, maybe the one's at the bottom of the pecking order as chicks or young birds?

To be honest so far I have culled the ones at the bottom of the pecking order or any that seemed to be lacking confidence.

Speaking of culling.
I have 2 ruble pullets (Wheaton)
2 ruble stags
1 leiper pullet
1 leiper stag
If anyone wants them pm me. Nothing wrong with any of them. Just don't need them. I can post current pics tomorrow.

Ruble or Leiper?

I'm sending 2 pair of my Bates to Kentucky next week.

The darkest pullet is the #1 pick going represent me and my fowl. There's not a cull in this pen, just some fine specimens of real Game Hatch fowl. This stag is my #1 pick of the Bates for this year of breeding.
