I'm wondering if Laura is talking about how they "feel"?

I've noticed there is a different "feel" to my birds feathers. For example - Barred Rocks, Australorps feel like velvet and are very smooth (tight feathering), while my Orpingtons are soft and fluffy, but have a "texture" so are not quite so smooth.

Maybe a "girl thing":D

I think hard feathering is like a Cornish vs like a Cochin what would be only through logic soft feathering

I agree...hard feathering would be like Cornish. "Soft and fluffy" would be like Cochin, but I would tend to think that the Cornish would feel more velvety compared to the Cochin. Could be wrong, but to me, the "fluffier" feathers have a more coarse texture.

I know what "tight feathering" is on gamefowl. Just about all good leiper, hatch type hens are like this. Where some other lines aren't. Blues are softer, looser feathered I suppose. Don't mean anything though as far as I know

I think I'm gonna run outta wire. D*mnit. Got plenty of insulators though.

Hmmm...a frizzle or sizzle or fizzle:p yeah, I would think they would be soft:)

Are you seriously getting some Cochins?

I do like the looks of the Lakenvelder. Beautiful birds. Wouldn't mind having some of them, I've only seen them at MM - problem is orders are too large for me. I only add about 6-7 birds at a time, so...min order of 25 or 15 doesn't work.
