Lol your high maintenance.

How's your blacks over hatch turn out or have you done any crossing between the two?
All the blacks I have are Mel sims blacks. They have hatch in them. One family has obviously had some more hatch added recently since I get a few hatch colored birds from two black parents.

That guy makes some great knives! Slipjoint folders start at $600 lol
Most I’ve ever paid for a knife is $175. Handmade slipjoint knives are worth a lot to collectors but there’s plenty of great knives out there for a lot less. I would still buy the GEC knives but that’s about as much as I’m paying. Not those crazy eBay prices either. That’s guys who buy them up and resell them for $$. I have a few I paid $70 for that have sold for over $250 the next year.

I did cross rubles/blacks a year or so ago and didn’t like them. I’ve crossed a few birds the past few years and to be honest not too many have been better than the originals I started with with two exceptions. Miner/sweater and wh/Kelso
Both are excellent.
I’ve crossed the three families of blacks I have and they all seem pretty equal. I crossed penny/wh and didn’t like them at all. Penny/leipers were good but mean as hell. I still have a few crossed hens running around too.

I’ve crossed quite a few Black grey crosses this year and aren’t super impressed with them either. One stag stands out but that isn’t enough.
I have one black ruble/redquill pullet loose still I need to put up.

I hear you. We use the stove as our main source, simply because we like the type of heat. It gets fired up in the fall and burns all winter long. We are the same way on wood too. No pine, but whatever hardwood is free. Between friends and power company trimming, I have not had to buy wood in a long time.

Sometimes it is just hard to fight mother nature. Heat slows me down, but cold slows everything down. Things just don't work the same!
