That is smart. The two in mine do not like roosting inside closed part because of heat. In winter they go in just fine. During the latter part of each day the two are released to free-range yard with kids. Pullet goes back but cock must be pulled from a Bradford Pear tree every night. Bradford Pear trees are a pain by just about every measure. Thorns, thick, break in wind, and invasive. The fruit are about a bad as green persimmons.

But when they are clean, they sure are pretty. I hatched one little splash pullet and she was the ugliest chick with all the rain we had, but she is managing to stay a little cleaner are she matures.

It’s very frustrating after a few days of hard rain followed by cloudy weather. Pens take forever to dry. I do what I can by adding straw and fixing holes but it’s usually only temporary. I’ve had them get so bad after many days of rain I just turned all my hens loose.

I hear you! SOHC is in the same boat, this year. Wet and muddy are hard to deal with in heavier soils. Dry or frozen works a little better.

There are no rain forests in NC, where do you really live? lol A friend was telling me the other day, we are about 17 inches ahead for the year. I keep wondering how the farmers are going to get in the fields this fall to harvest as there is standing water in many places.

See the welded wire and chicken wire? For anyone looking at this don’t keep baby chicks in a pen like this. They can and will get caught in the chicken wire. Use hardware cloth for babies.
