leiper pullet

Ughh out of the ruble eggs I hatched I got 5 stags and only 1 pullet. I was looking for pullets. Maybe I should have checked the egg shape before I set em.

I got a solid black pullet and I believe two black stags that should end up similar to the ones me and Flypen have. I also have a pair of pullets that are white with a grey splash and only 1 solid grey pullet. The rest are splash/blue mix

Late chick / early juvenile feather set of BBR colored game. Pullet / female (left) and stag / male (right). On these guys I can sex them based on color pattern of feathers located in central region of area bordering the back and lower hackles. Does not work on stags that show signs of hennie feathering as adults.

We are having a little drama here. Last night dogs bolted into cockyard like, well, mad dogs. Cause for reaction not known to me at the time. This morning I went out and found same game hen back and tail feathers on the ground directly below where a hen just started roosting up with chicks. I found hen minus those feathers all good with all chicks. Tonight as I wrapped around cockyard i noticed all free-range hens and juveniles that would otherwise roost up where roosting deep in the high grass. All this means the Great-horned Owls are back to their business of trying to go Snuffy Smith on me. This will continue until dogs give them a close call. The new kids on the block, a couple young of year GHO's, have been making racket about every night within sight of porch for the last two months. It is kind of cool hearing and seeing a pair of owls every morning for over an hour before dawn at the same time the cocks and stags are crowing up their storms. Hopefully I will not wake up to an owl carcass before those youngster owls get wise.
