Either way I would agree with sdm111. Sounds like a possum.
If you don't already have one. Do yourself a favor and don't buy a havahart cage trap. They are cheap and a little bit small and flimsy. I've had raccoons destroy them. They sell better cages at trapping supply shops with sliding washers as the locking/closing mechanism.

if you notice the washer on the bottom on the front right bottom, it's a better system. I see so many people that can't catch anything in those crappy havaharts. They close from just being bumped resulting in nothing. Lol

I've looked at the traps at tractor supply but never thought of getting one but now I'll go invest in one cause I've never had problems out if possums or coons

so u know u already have possoms around and the cock was on a cord

That's why I posted what I just did. Don't buy the cages from tractor supply. They are havaharts. They suck! Check out fntpost.com. The cages are more expensive but they will catch everything without misses and will outlast you. Or learn to use foothold traps or snares which is far cheaper. Please don't waste money on those cheap cages.
