Just another owl luvr.
I gave the h*ll up. They're all over the place now. I penned what I was after the other day so we'll see how the rest make out. Im running 18 raccoon traps and some snares for fox but I can't stop the owls and hawks.

I have some broody hens that take their broods outside the protected area each night to roost in bushes on the ground. Requires 15 minutes every evening to go out, put nest box on ground so hen and brood goes in before I take the boxes back into barn. Hens at least walk into boxes now without getting too sassy.

A lot of work, but I know its worth it. I've had hen just outside my backyard fence get snatched up by coyotes at night.

Had a hen last night choose to roost lower than she normally would have because her chick couldnt/wouldnt make it up the tree. I think that is unusual because most of the hens I have would just pick their spot and force the chick to climb up to her position, usually high in the tree. Must be an attentive mama (maybe because she only has one chick).

I have been making roost accessibly to chicks by the time they are pushing two weeks old. They sometimes go up at such a young age when it is really hot. otherwise they are all roosting 6 feet or more up by 4 weeks but I can not let that be in trees outside the perimeter dogs protect.
